Job summary

Bakelite is seeking a Maintenance Technician (Instrumentation bias) to provide hands-on maintenance and troubleshooting across mechanical, instrumentation, and electrical systems. You will work with a shift team to support DCS-controlled operations and drive continual improvements while following health and safety and COMAH requirements.

Role requires an Instrument/Electrical apprenticeship with I/E experience, IEE 18th Edition preferred, and familiarity with SAP.

Qualifications

• Recognised Instrument/Electrical engineering apprenticeship (HNC/ONC or BTech City & Guilds).
• IEE 18th Edition (preferred).
• ATEX trained.
• COMPEX trained.
• COMAH regulations knowledge (desirable).
• ISO9001 knowledge.
• Experience using SAP (desirable).
• Ability to fault find on VSDs/PLCs/DCS.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot and repair plant equipment to meet production schedules; record work in SAP and progress long-term improvements.
• Collaborate across teams to meet business objectives and ensure safe operations.
• Interface with SAP; progress work instructions, preventative maintenance plans, and store transactions.
• Plan labour resources and liaise with maintenance to ensure continuity of works.
• Ensure all contracted labour follow site safety procedures and quality standards.
• Identify improvements and work with engineering teams to resolve plant issues.
• Maintain plant and equipment, including electrical and instrumentation systems.
• Support IS0 quality standards and compliance with regulatory requirements.

Maintenance Technician (Instrumentation bias)

Position Overview

The role of Maintenance Technician (Instrumentation bias) reports to the Maintenance Manager. The Maintenance Technician will work as part of an integrated shift team to provide a full technical and operational service to cover troubleshooting, installation and maintenance of all site mechanical, instrumentation and electrical systems including DCS controlled process operations. Work with a self-directed Manufacturing Team to optimize asset output. Maintenance Technicians are expected to operate as a member of a team whilst taking instruction from the Maintenance Manager and the Management Team.

Job Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot and repair plant equipment breakdowns to ensure production schedules are met, remedial work details are recorded in the SAP system and long-term improvements are progressed.
• Liaise within the team to ensure business objectives are met, ensuring effective working across the total operations group.
• Interface with the SAP system. Progress work instructions and preventative maintenance plans, enter job completion data and associated stores issue transactions.
• Help to plan labour resource requirements, including the hiring of contract labour to meet the maintenance programme, and liaise with Maintenance Department to ensure continuity of works.
• Ensure that all engineering contract labour follows site operating and safety procedures, and the quality of work is compliant with company standards.
• Identify improvement opportunities, and progress with team(s) and line management. Will operate as a member of a specialist engineering team to resolve plant issues.
• Liaise with suppliers on technical and spares issues.
• Maintain and monitor plant and equipment.
• Maintenance of both administration buildings and Process Plant.
• Maintenance of a variety of mechanical equipment including pumps, blowers, agitators, switchgear, control panels, junction boxes, associated safety devices and DCS on chemical/steam related plant.
• Flexibility to work on all types of equipment as trained.
• Ensuring weighing facilities are maintained to conform to trading standards.
• Effect preventative maintenance regime.
• Carry out condition monitoring.
• Organise maintenance work to minimise plant downtime.
• Liaise with production and engineering personnel to effect installation/modification programmes.
• Interface with regulatory authorities and statutory legislation contractors to ensure compliance.
• To co-operate with your employer fulfilling your role under the Health and Safety at work Act 1974.
• Not to interfere with or misuse equipment which is provided, in the interest of Health and Safety.
• Take part in relevant internal and external meetings when deemed suitable by the management team including safety meetings, quality meetings and production meetings.
• Undertake all relevant training internal and external to allow full execution of the role.
• Undertaking and completion of housekeeping in all maintenance areas.
• Understanding and meeting the requirements of IS9001.
• Performing several tasks simultaneously and completing as dictated by maintenance schedules.

Local Specific Requirements For The Role

• Becoming fully conversant with site emergency and health and safety procedures and able to understand the role of the Process Technician.
• Fully understand and comply with all HSE requirements applicable for an upper tier COMAH site.
• Actively promote the concept of “Total Team Working” throughout the Operations Group.

Education & Experience

• A recognised Instrument/Electrical (I/E) engineering apprenticeship educated to HNC/ONC or BTech City & Guilds.
• Instrumentation experience.
• IEE 18th Edition (preferred).
• Ability to fault find on VSDs and PLCs/DCS.
• Proven ability and experience within a similar process plant environment.
• ATEX trained.
• COMPEX trained.
• Knowledge of Health and Safety.
• Knowledge of Permit to Work System.
• Knowledge of COMAH regulations and requirements (desired).
• Knowledge of Quality Management System (ISO9001).
• Experience using basic computer packages (word, excel etc.)
• Experience in operation of plant control systems (DCS or similar).
• Experience in using SAP (desired).
• Motivated, disciplined self-starter with ability to work unsupervised and under own initiative.
