Job summary

Black Mountains College in Wales is seeking a part-time Maintenance Officer to care for our buildings, grounds, vehicles and facilities. The role starts at one day per week (7.5 hours) with potential for extra hours during busy periods, projects and events.

You will work under the Facilities Officer to ensure facilities remain safe, functional and welcoming. The ideal candidate has practical maintenance skills, can work independently and handle basic carpentry, plumbing, painting and safety

Responsibilities

  • Carry out routine maintenance, repairs and minor improvement works across College sites.
  • Undertake basic carpentry, painting, decorating, plumbing and general repair tasks as needed.
  • Conduct regular inspections of buildings, grounds and equipment.
  • Support safe maintenance of external areas and events setup.
  • Assist with maintenance records and reporting to the Facilities Officer.
  • Help coordinate with external contractors when required.

Job description

Hours:

Part-time: 1 day per week (7.5 hours) initiallyAdditional hours may become available throughout the year depending on operational requirements, projects and seasonal demands.



Reports to:

Facilities Officer



Holidays:

Annual leave equivalent to 28 days per year for a full-time employee, plus bank holidays and Christmas closure days, pro rata according to hours worked.



Location:

Talgarth, Powys (with travel around the local area)and to Treherbert, Rhondda Cynon Taff



Background of BMC:

Black Mountains College (BMC) is a unique college based in the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park and Rhondda Cynon Taf on the edge of the Cardiff Metropolitan Area. BMC is re-imagining what education is for and how it is delivered. We teach innovative tertiary education programmes focused on future vocational skills and a degree programme called 'Sustainable Futures'.



We are entering our fifth academic year and have students of all ages and backgrounds, two centres in Talgarth and Treherbert and various community-based teaching venues in each centre.



Purpose of the role:

The Maintenance Officer will support the upkeep, safety and functionality of Black Mountains College's buildings, grounds, vehicles and facilities. Working under the direction of the Facilities and Procurement Officer, the postholder will carry out routine maintenance tasks, assist with repairs and site improvements, conduct regular inspections, and help ensure that College facilities remain safe, welcoming and fit for purpose.



This is a practical, hands-on role suited to someone with good maintenance skills, a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work independently.



The College is seeking a flexible individual who can initially commit to one day per week, with the possibility of additional hours during busy periods, facilities projects, events, and site improvement works.



Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Carry out routine maintenance, repairs and minor improvement works across College sites and facilities.

  • Undertake basic carpentry, painting, decorating, plumbing and general repair tasks where appropriate.

  • Conduct regular inspections of buildings, grounds, equipment and facilities, reporting any defects or issues.

  • Assist with maintaining safe and tidy external areas, including pathways, car parks, fences and outdoor learning spaces.

  • Support the set-up and breakdown of rooms, teaching spaces and events.

  • Perform routine checks on College vehicles and report maintenance requirements.

  • Replace consumables and carry out simple maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, fixing minor fixtures and fittings, and assembling equipment.

  • Assist contractors working on site and help ensure works are completed safely and efficiently.

  • Support compliance activities including fire safety checks, water temperature monitoring, equipment inspections and health and safety requirements.

  • Maintain maintenance records and report completed work to the Facilities and Procurement Officer.

  • Monitor stock levels of maintenance materials and supplies.

  • Assist with waste management, recycling and environmental improvement initiatives.

  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests from staff and students.

  • Support emergency maintenance requirements as required.

  • Contribute to maintaining a safe and secure environment across all College properties.



Essential Skills and Experience:


  • Experience of general building maintenance, caretaking, facilities support or a similar practical role.

  • Good DIY and repair skills across a range of maintenance tasks.

  • Ability to identify maintenance issues and implement appropriate solutions.

  • Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively.

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Reliable, flexible and organised approach to work.

  • Awareness of health and safety requirements in the workplace.

  • Full UK driving licence.



Desirable Skills and Experience:


  • Experience working in an educational, community or public sector environment.

  • Basic skills in plumbing, electrical maintenance or carpentry.

  • Health and Safety training or qualification.

  • Experience of working with external contractors.

  • Understanding of environmental sustainability and practical conservation measures.

  • Welsh speaker.
