Coleg Sir Gar is seeking a practical Technician in Construction (Wet Trades) to join the Ammanford Campus and VSC Centre in Llanelli, supporting brickwork and plastering training. You will ensure workshops, materials, equipment and resources are prepared and available to enable effective teaching and learning.

The role requires a good understanding of construction materials and tools, with duties in stock management, ordering, and maintaining safety and quality across workshops.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Level 2/3 qualification in a trade-related area.
  • First Aid qualification or willingness to undertake training.
  • Recent and relevant experience in the technical field.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical assistance and support for teaching and learning within your area.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment in accordance with Health & Safety regulations.
  • Prepare and update Health & Safety documents and equipment maintenance records.
  • Maintain, upgrade and service workshop equipment and machinery; undertake training when required.
  • Ensure care and security of course equipment, materials and stock.
  • Maintain stores inventory and process stock orders.
  • Support course teams and contribute to curriculum meetings as required.
  • Assist with marketing and promotion of the course programme.
  • Support lecturers and students in workshop-based activities per timetable.

Compensation: £25,949 - £29,069 / year

Description

We are seeking to appoint a practical, organised and resourceful Technician to join our Construction team, providing technical and operational support across our Wet Trades provision, with a particular focus on brickwork and plastering. The successful candidate will support the Construction delivery team by ensuring workshops, materials, equipment and resources are prepared, maintained and readily available to support effective teaching and learning.

The role will require a good understanding of construction materials and practical processes, together with the ability to safely operate and manage a range of tools, equipment and workshop machinery. The successful candidate will also contribute to the day-to-day management of materials and stock, including receiving deliveries, maintaining appropriate stock levels, assisting with purchasing and ordering, and ensuring resources are stored safely and efficiently. Good IT skills and the ability to use computer-based systems for ordering, stock management, record-keeping and general administration are essential.

The role will be primarily based across our Ammanford Campus and VSC Centre in Llanelli, while also supporting the wider technical requirements of the Curriculum Area and contributing to the development of an efficient, safe and well-organised learning environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical assistance and support for teaching and learning within your area, responding to the needs of students, academic staff and the relevant course leader/s;
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment, complying with Health & Safety regulations;
  • Prepare, maintain and update relevant Health & Safety documentation such as Risk Assessments, Safe Systems of Work, COSHH records and equipment maintenance records, in liaison with course teams;
  • Maintain, upgrade and service equipment as planned, required or requested; wood machining and other construction related static and portable machinery and equipment. Receive relevant training as and when necessary;
  • Ensure the care, control, maintenance and security of course equipment, materials and stock;
  • Maintain stores inventory for consumables, equipment and delivery resources;
  • Carry out ordering of stock in line with college financial procedures and update online ordering database;
  • Provide a stores issue service for course consumables and an issue and return service for all departmental equipment and other course items;
  • Participate in course team; student consultative committees; and curriculum area meetings as required;
  • Carry out duties which support marketing and promotion of course programme;
  • Support lecturers and students in undertaking workshop based activities, in line with agreed timetable
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Welsh Language Requirements:

  • Welsh Oracy (Listening/Speaking) - Level 0/1
  • Welsh Literacy (Writing/Reading) - Level 0/1

Essential Criteria:

  • Minimum Level 2/3 Qualification in a trade related area

Desirable Criteria:

  • GCSE English and Mathematics at minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent
  • IOSH Managing Safely (If you are not IOSH qualified, you will be expected to undertake training as soon as possible)
  • A good understanding of the technical support role in Further Education
  • Be competent in the use and maintenance of the following machinery: Aggregate mixing and maintenance of static and portable machinery and equipment related to the trade
