Job summary

Allscreens Nationwide Ltd is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to support maintenance and operation of mechanical building services across NHS healthcare estates. You will perform PPM, reactive repairs, fault finding and minor installations to keep critical systems safe and compliant.

Role requires knowledge of ventilation, boilers, pumps, domestic water and medical gas systems, with the ability to work independently or in a multidisciplinary team and participate in on-call duties as

Qualifications

  • Recognised engineering apprenticeship in a relevant mechanical discipline.
  • Minimum 3 years' post-apprenticeship maintenance experience.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical building services and plant maintenance.
  • Proven fault diagnosis and preventive maintenance experience.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • GCSE Maths and English, or equivalent.
  • Right to Work in the UK.
  • Flexible approach to working hours and willingness to work across different sites.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on mechanical plant and equipment.
  • Respond to reactive maintenance tasks, diagnosing faults and carrying out repairs.
  • Maintain and repair complex mechanical systems, including ventilation systems, boilers and heating systems, pumps and compressors, domestic hot and cold-water systems, medical gas systems.
  • Assist with minor mechanical installation and upgrade works.
  • Carry out fault diagnosis and identify defects or potential issues.
  • Complete maintenance records, job reports and relevant documentation accurately.
  • Ensure all works comply with health & safety, infection control and statutory requirements.
  • Liaise with hospital wards, departments and other stakeholders to minimise disruption.
  • Support a flexible, multi-skilled engineering service across the Trust estate.
  • Participate in on-call and emergency call-out arrangements where required.

Job description

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to support the maintenance and operation of mechanical building services across a busy NHS healthcare estate.

The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive repairs, fault-finding and minor installation works, ensuring critical mechanical systems remain safe, compliant and fully operational.

This role requires a strong understanding of mechanical building services, excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on mechanical plant and equipment.

Respond to reactive maintenance tasks, diagnosing faults and carrying out repairs.

Maintain and repair complex mechanical systems, including:

Ventilation systems

Boilers and heating systems

Pumps and compressors

Domestic hot and cold-water systems

Medical gas systems

Assist with minor mechanical installation and upgrade works.

Carry out fault diagnosis and identify defects or potential issues.

Complete maintenance records, job reports and relevant documentation accurately.

Ensure all works comply with health & safety, infection control and statutory requirements.

Liaise professionally with hospital wards, departments, colleagues and other stakeholders to minimise disruption.

Support a flexible, multi-skilled engineering service across the Trust estate.

Participate in on-call and emergency call-out arrangements where required.

Assist with gritting and snow clearance arrangements when required.

Work across different healthcare sites within the Trust estate as necessary.

HEALTH, SAFETY & COMPLIANCE

Follow all company and site-specific health & safety procedures and safe systems of work.

Ensure maintenance activities comply with relevant risk assessments and method statements.

Maintain a safe and professional working environment at all times.

Comply with NHS infection control procedures and relevant statutory regulations.

Report hazards, defects, incidents and safety concerns promptly.

Ensure maintenance documentation and records are completed accurately.

Follow appropriate procedures when working on critical healthcare infrastructure.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

Recognised engineering apprenticeship in a relevant mechanical discipline, such as City & Guilds or equivalent.

Minimum 3 years' post-apprenticeship maintenance experience.

Strong knowledge of mechanical building services and plant maintenance.

Proven experience in fault diagnosis, repairs and preventative maintenance.

Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Good communication and customer service skills.

GCSE/O Level Maths and English, or equivalent.

Full UK Driving Licence.

Flexible approach to working hours and willingness to work across different sites when required.

Right to Work documentation.

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS

Previous experience working within a healthcare or hospital maintenance environment.

Knowledge of electrical systems.

Previous Competent Person or Authorised Person experience.

Experience relating to ventilation or pressure systems.
