Job summary

Mitie Group plc. is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to maintain mechanical plant and building services across a busy government estate in the Swansea area. The role covers PPMs, reactive maintenance, fault finding and support for project works to minimise disruption and ensure statutory compliance.

You will ensure safe isolation, testing and safe working practices while maintaining detailed records and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Experience carrying out PPM in line with standards and contractual obligations.
  • Proven ability to perform reactive maintenance and fault diagnosis.
  • Understanding of safe systems of work and permits.
  • Knowledge of HVAC, air handling units and ventilation systems.

Job description

To deliver a compliant and efficient mechanical, heating and ventilation maintenance service across a busy, operational government estate. The role includes planned preventative maintenance, reactive maintenance, fault finding, remedial repairs and support to project and billable works, ensuring minimal disruption to critical operations and full compliance with statutory, contractual and site-specific requirements.

The Mechanical Engineer will support the continued operation, reliability and compliance of mechanical plant, equipment and associated building services across the estate.

Key Responsibilities
Maintenance Delivery
  • Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) in line with SFG20, statutory requirements, manufacturer guidance and contractual obligations.
  • Complete reactive maintenance tasks in response to mechanical faults, breakdowns, plant failures or service requests.
  • Ensure mechanical systems are maintained in a safe, compliant and fully operational condition.
  • Support statutory inspections, compliance activities and maintenance regimes across relevant mechanical systems.
  • Complete all allocated works within agreed timescales, ensuring accurate records and appropriate escalation where required.
Pipework and associated mechanical infrastructure
Plantroom equipment and controls interfaces
  • Undertake repairs efficiently to restore service and reduce operational downtime.
  • Identify root causes of recurring mechanical issues and recommend practical long-term solutions.
  • Escalate complex faults, compliance risks or specialist requirements to the Engineering Supervisor or relevant management team.
  • Support safe isolation, reinstatement and testing of mechanical systems following maintenance or repair activities.
Compliance & Safety
  • Work in accordance with site Health & Safety procedures, permits and safe systems of work.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant statutory, regulatory and site-specific requirements, including:
    • Health and Safety at Work requirements
    • Pressure systems requirements where applicable
    • Water hygiene and Legionella control requirements where applicable
    • Permit to Work and Authority to Work processes
    • Site-specific control of work procedures
  • Accurately complete all documentation and maintain clear audit trails.
  • Ensure tools, equipment and work areas are maintained safely and professionally.
  • Identify and report risks, defects, non-compliance, unsafe conditions or recurring issues.
Systems & Reporting
  • Update CAFM systems with detailed job notes, completion evidence and status updates.
  • Record all relevant data relating to:
    • PPM completion
    • Reactive works
    • Remedial actions
    • Billable or chargeable works
    • Asset condition and defects
  • Ensure work orders are updated accurately and closed within required timescales.
  • Highlight risks, non-compliance, repeat failures and operational concerns to management.
  • Support trend analysis and improvement actions through accurate reporting and clear communication.
Recognised mechanical qualification, such as NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, apprenticeship or equivalent mechanical engineering qualification.
  • HVAC, heating and ventilation knowledge or experience, particularly in:
    • Air handling units
    • Fan coil units
  • Experience delivering PPM and reactive maintenance within a commercial, public sector, critical environment or large operational estate.
  • Strong mechanical fault-finding and diagnostic capability.
  • Experience working with mechanical plant, heating systems, ventilation systems, pumps, valves and associated building services.
  • Understanding of safe systems of work, isolation procedures and permit-controlled environments.
Fault Finding & Repairs
  • Diagnose mechanical faults across a range of building services and plant, including but not limited to, Pumps and pressurisation units
  • Heating circuits and associated controls
  • Mechanical interfaces with BMS or controls systems.
  • LV supply and control panel maintenance
  • Knowledge of SFG20 maintenance standards.
  • Basic understanding of water hygiene, pressure systems and mechanical compliance frameworks.
