The successful candidate will hold a degree in a recognised engineering discipline or possess equivalent engineering qualifications with demonstrable experience operating at the required level.

This role demands an individual with excellent leadership qualities and a proven track record in managing and motivating engineering teams. Key responsibilities include overseeing planned and reactive maintenance, driving continuous improvement initiatives, and delivering engineering projects on time and within budget. Exceptional planning and project management skills are essential.

A background in the waste processing industry is desirable, but not essential. Above all, the right attitude, capability, and a proactive approach to leadership and problem-solving will be key to success in this role.

Purpose of the Role

To lead, manage and develop maintenance operations across two busy sites, ensuring the effective delivery of planned and reactive maintenance. This role demands a self-motivating, strong, proactive leader with excellent project management skills, a high level of attention to detail, and a collaborative mindset to foster a culture of safety, reliability, and continuous improvement within the maintenance and operational teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership & Development
    • To Lead, motivate, and develop on-site maintenance teams to achieve high performance and foster a positive, team-oriented environment.
    • Promote cross-site collaboration to share best practices and ensure consistency in operations.
    • Oversee planning and scheduling, training, performance management, and development of maintenance staff.
  • Maintenance Operations
    • Ensure timely and effective execution of preventative and reactive maintenance activities across both sites.
    • Oversee the maintenance of mechanical, electrical, and site infrastructure.
    • Implement and maintain robust asset management and CMMS systems.
    • Work in collaboration to develop new and more effective ways of conducting maintenance across sites, to assist in the roll out and introduction of new systems and procedures.
  • Project Management
    • Plan, manage, and deliver maintenance improvement projects on time and within budget.
    • Coordinate with external contractors and suppliers to ensure work is carried out to required standards and regulations.
    • Prepare and present project plans, reports, and updates to senior management.
  • Health, Safety & Compliance
    • Ensure all maintenance work is conducted in compliance with health and safety legislation, internal policies, and industry standards.
    • Conduct regular site inspections and risk assessments.
    • Lead incident investigations and corrective action plans when required.
    • Ensure high standards of Engineering hygiene and housekeeping.
  • Budgeting & Cost Control
    • Develop and manage maintenance budgets for both sites.
    • Monitor and control maintenance expenditures, identify cost-saving opportunities, and ensure efficient use of resources.
  • Continuous Improvement & Innovation
    • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to increase reliability, efficiency, and sustainability of site operations.
    • Stay up to date with emerging technologies and maintenance best practices to enhance performance and reduce downtime.
Key Skills & Attributes

  • Proven and demonstrable leadership experience with the ability to manage and inspire teams across multiple sites.
  • Strong project management skills with a track record of delivering maintenance projects effectively.
  • High attention to detail with strong organisational and proven time management abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across departments.
  • Analytical and problem-solving mindset with a proactive approach to challenges.
  • Solid understanding of maintenance practices, safety regulations, and industry standards.
  • Strong understanding of maintenance strategies (e.g., predictive, preventive, condition-based).

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in an equivalent maintenance leadership role, preferably with experience across multi-site operations.
  • Must be technically qualified in engineering, or a related field (Degree level/HND/HNC or suitable equivalent), and be able to show all certification.
  • Experience with CMMS systems and maintenance planning tools.
  • Project management qualification (e.g., PRINCE2, PMP) is desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation and compliance standards (NEBOSH/IOSH).
