Job Purpose

We are the charity who look after and bring to life 2,000 miles of waterways across England and Wales, because we believe that life is better by water. Every role across the Trust plays it's part in transforming our canals and rivers into spaces where local people want to spend time and feel better, bringing wellbeing benefits to millions.

We runwaterside mooring as part of our discretionary commercial business activities. This income is really important because it goes towards the work we do to bring the waterways to life for everyone. Our mooring sites comprise of those on the main lines of the canal/river which can either be next to the towpath or on the opposite bank, or they can be located ‘offline’ which includes small basins, lay-bys and marinas. The numbers of boats at eachsitevaries greatly from 1 to over 50.

We currently looking for a Moorings Maintenance Manager who will be responsible for overseeing basic maintenance and repair activities; supervising contractors to deliver customer driven service and product improvements within a safe environment.

As the Mooring MaintenanceManager you will ensure that health and safety and welfare issues are communicated effectively and promoted within their area of responsibility. The job holder will fully understand their responsibilities for and fulfil their duties in accordance with the Trusts policy and procedures. The role will require a minimum level of site attendance at mooring sites which are predominantly within northern canal network, approximately 2 days per week would be anticipated, however, operational issues can occur at any time and this may require increased time on mooring sites as and when the need arises.

Location & coverage

Our Mooring Maintenance Manager vacancy will be offered on a remote working basis, with a requirement to attend our main hub spaces as and when required for team working and collaborative meetings.

Relevant Hubs: Leeds, Ellesmere Port, Burnley, Newark.

Travel throughout the regional waterway network will also be expected to enable site visits and to shadow colleagues as part of our buddy system. The role covers the North of England, covering the canal network from around Leeds coming down to, give or take, the Stoke area.

The regularity & flexibility of travel will be discussed further at interview stage. Regular accessibility to the local network is essential in order to fulfil duties.

Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

Key Accountabilities:

The job holder will support the delivery of the Trust’s key business objectives through the delivery of their key deliverables as follows:

  • Carry out frequent and regular mooring site visits to assess condition of assets, identify defects and assess the level of service provided by the Trust’s waste, vegetation and property maintenance contractors.
  • Regularly review site specifications and maintenance plans to ensure appropriate levels of service are maintained.
  • Carry out basic maintenance and repairs (e.g., painting, securing boundaries, erecting signage, repairing locks, fixing leaking water taps, removing blockages, securing/protecting trip hazards) on mooring sites and recognising when & where to seek external / internal resource.
  • Respond to works identified from customers and the Mooring Sales Manager within defined service standards utilising internal or external resources.
  • Review contractors’ applications for payment to validate that work being claimed for by the contractor has been carried out to the right specification and the price is as agreed in the contract.
  • Feedback on the standard of contractors’ performance and attend meetings with contractor representatives as necessary.
  • Support & contribute to plans for site development and/or improvement projects to meet business plan targets.
  • Undertake risk assessments and other site assessments needed including visitor risk elements
  • Reporting of incidents, accidents, positive interventions and near misses.
  • Develop robust and effective communication methods to help deliver excellent customer service (including making face to face contact with customers).
  • Maintain SAP asset data ensuring it is accurate, up to date and reporting on this data as necessary.
  • Carry out consistency checks in compliance with environment and heritage standards through compliance with Environment Appraisals.
  • Monitor adherence of statutory testing and agree works/actions which result from it.
  • Consult local mooring customers on service standards, site rules, and other local issues as well as handling general enquiries relating to maintenance activity.
  • Operational issues can emerge at any time requiring the Mooring Maintenance Manager to be available for working outside of their usual contracted hours.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

Essential:

  • Demonstrable experience in construction, building or engineering related fields, including knowledge of managing, planning, and sizing a job for delivery.
  • NEBOSH Certification or other formal Health & Safety qualifications e.g. IOSH or NVQ.
  • Contract management & contract delivery experience.
  • Diagnosis skills in analysing building / building / facility services defects.
  • Good standard of writing, numeracy, and IT skills (including Microsoft packages).
  • Full driving licence appropriate for vehicle to be driven.

Desirable:

  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent) in relevant discipline.
  • Experience working with CDM procedures (The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015).
  • CSCS card or SSSTS certifications (Site safety accreditations).
  • Knowledge of SAP.
