Job summary

Sopwell House is seeking a passionate Painter & Decorator to join our Maintenance team. This full-time role involves painting, decorating, and preventative maintenance within our Georgian country house hotel in Hertfordshire.

Shifts typically span 7:00 am–5:00 pm, with occasional evenings as business needs require, and the role emphasizes guest-friendly service and high workmanship standards. You’ll work under the Maintenance Manager, maintain logs, perform repairs and project work, and

Qualifications

• Experience in painting & decorating, preferably within a hotel, commercial, or high-quality environment.
• Knowledge of health & safety practices and safe working procedures.
• Professional, guest-aware approach with ability to minimise disruption.
• Flexible to shifts, including evenings, weekends and holidays if required.

Responsibilities

• Ensure all painting and decorating work is completed to a high standard, following health and safety guidelines.
• Work under the direction of the Maintenance Manager, carrying out daily duties from the defects logbook.
• Perform preventative maintenance tasks, keeping log sheets and records up to date.
• Carry out repairs and project work as required.
• Take full responsibility for completing all assigned jobs to a high standard.
• Liaise with relevant departments to ensure smooth coordination of works.
• Minimise disruption to guests while carrying out duties.
• Report problems to your manager or senior management when needed.

Full-Time Position (40 hours) - Shifts typically vary between 7:00 am – 5:00 pm. Occasional evening shifts may be required depending on business needs.

Your role in our family:

• Ensure all painting and decorating work is completed to a high standard, following all relevant health and safety guidelines
• Work under the direction of the Maintenance Manager, carrying out daily duties from the defects logbook
• Perform preventative maintenance tasks, ensuring all log sheets and records are kept up to date
• Carry out repairs and project work as required
• Take full responsibility for completing all assigned jobs to a high standard

• Report any problems or issues to your manager, or to senior management in their absence

• Previous experience in a Painter & Decorator role, ideally within a hotel, commercial, or high-quality environment.
• Good knowledge of health & safety practices and safe working procedures.

• A professional manner with the ability to remain guest-aware and minimise disruption.
• Strong communication and organisational skills.
• Ability to work independently while also contributing to a close-knit maintenance team.
• Flexibility to work varying shifts, including occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays if required.
