Job summary

SSI SCHAEFER in Daventry, United Kingdom, is seeking a Maintenance Engineer to maintain and optimise advanced automated material handling equipment in a highly automated distribution site. You will perform planned preventive and reactive maintenance, diagnose faults, and contribute to continuous improvement within a global automation leader.

The role requires experience with automated systems, electrical/mechanical engineering knowledge, and a relevant apprenticeship or ONC/HNC/BTEC.

Qualifications

  • ONC/HNC/BTEC or equivalent in Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical or PLC Engineering.
  • Recognised apprenticeship in engineering.
  • Cross training from Mechanical to Electrical Engineering is desirable.
  • PLC knowledge is advantageous.
  • Health and safety qualifications are desirable.
  • Experience with automated materials handling equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned preventative and reactive maintenance on automated material handling equipment.
  • Minimise equipment downtime while maintaining high maintenance standards.
  • Diagnose faults, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions.
  • Record maintenance activities and equipment data using CMMS.
  • Collaborate with customers and internal teams for efficient site operations.
  • Ensure compliance with Health & Safety standards and procedures.
  • Assist in training new engineers and developing technical documentation.

About the Role:

This is an exciting opportunity to join our resident engineering team at a highly automated distribution operation in Daventry.

As a Maintenance Engineer, you will be responsible for maintaining and optimizing advanced automated material handling equipment, ensuring high levels of system availability and performance in a fast-paced operational environment.

Working as part of an experienced engineering team, you will carry out planned preventative and reactive maintenance activities, diagnose and resolve faults, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives. This role offers the opportunity to work with industry-leading automation technology while developing your skills within a global leader in intralogistics and warehouse automation

What you will do:

  • Carry out planned preventative and reactive maintenance on automated material handling equipment.
  • Ensure maintenance and repairs are completed to a high standard while minimizing equipment downtime.
  • Diagnose faults, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions.
  • Record maintenance activities and equipment data using the CMMS system.
  • Collaborate closely with customers and internal engineering teams to ensure efficient site operations.
  • Ensure compliance with Health & Safety standards and company procedures.
  • Support the training of new engineers and contribute to the development of technical documentation.

What we’re looking for:

  • ONC/HNC/BTEC or equivalent in Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical or PLC Engineering.
  • A recognised apprenticeship in an appropriate engineering discipline.
  • Recognised cross training from Mechanical to Electrical Engineering of vice versa.
  • PLC knowledge and experience is advantageous.
  • Health and Safety Qualifications are desirable.
  • Experience of automated materials handling equipment.
  • Ability to work at height.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with customers and colleagues.

The role operates on a 28-day continental-style rotating shift pattern on 12 hours, providing an excellent work-life balance with 14 rest days in every cycle. The roster includes a combination of day and night shifts, with frequent 3 and 4-day breaks built into the pattern.
