Job overview

We have a great opportunity for you to assist in our hospitals by supporting our busy Estates team. We are looking for a Maintenance Assistant. You will be assisting with the maintenance and repair of a wide range of mechanical and electrical plant, equipment, and services, as well as minor building fabric repairs.

Your role will involve working as part of the Estates team to achieve site-wide engineering compliance, maintaining all building systems, and supporting the strategic aims set by the site Head of Estates.

Main duties of the job

  • Carry out routine work such as plant room checks and defect reporting
  • Change filters on Air Handling Units
  • Replace lamps
  • Check the condition of fire doors
  • Perform planned maintenance tasks
  • Paint and replace locks
  • Investigate and rectify minor faults
  • Assist craftspersons in their work
  • Perform other semi-skilled mechanical, electrical, and building repairs or maintenance within your competence as directed by Trust Estates officers and team leaders/supervisors
  • Conduct water sampling for legionella control (once trained and qualified)
  • Change taps, showers, and perform minor pipework alterations and drainage work
  • Assist with mechanical ventilation system isolations
  • Assist with medical gas systems work under direction (after training)
  • Conduct first response air conditioning checks
  • Be prepared to work outside normal hours (overtime) for emergencies or operational needs
  • Participate in the out-of-hours ‘on-call’ rota

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Communication and Relationship

  • Establish and develop effective communication with all stakeholders, internal and external
  • Handle verbal and written complaints effectively and report remedial actions to senior team members

Knowledge, Training, and Experience

  • This is an entry-level role; previous experience is not necessary
  • Previous experience in a similar role is desirable
  • Knowledge of hospital operational estates issues and maintenance procedures within a medical environment is advantageous
  • Mechanical, electrical, or building qualifications are desirable
  • NVQ 2 or equivalent with 2 years’ experience is preferred
