Job summary

Placrrecruitment Co is seeking a hands-on Machine Shop Supervisor in Storrington, West Sussex. You will lead CNC machining and sheet metal fabrication teams, drive production targets safely and efficiently, and develop your workforce in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

The role focuses on coordinating multiple processes, maintaining high quality, and delivering continuous improvements while promoting 5S and strong health and safety practices.

Qualifications

• Supervisory or team leadership experience in a manufacturing/engineering environment.
• Strong knowledge of CNC machining, including milling and/or turning.
• Experience with sheet metal processes such as punch press and waterjet cutting is advantageous.
• Excellent leadership, communication and people-management skills.
• Ability to prioritise workloads and make decisions under pressure.
• Experience reading engineering drawings and manufacturing specifications.

Responsibilities

• Supervise daily operations of the CNC machine shop and sheet metal fabrication areas.
• Lead, motivate and develop machinists, operators and fabricators.
• Plan and prioritise workloads to meet production and delivery requirements.
• Monitor productivity, machine utilisation and labour efficiency.
• Ensure components are manufactured to required quality standards.
• Coordinate production across CNC machining, punch press and waterjet cutting operations.
• Work with Planning, Engineering, Quality and Maintenance to resolve issues.
• Promote health and safety standards throughout the department.
• Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to boost productivity and quality.
• Support training and skills progression of staff.

Exciting Opportunity – Machine Shop Supervisor

This is an excellent opportunity to join a world-leading engineering company specialising in the manufacture of high-precision electromagnetic devices for the science and healthcare sectors.

Working within a friendly and supportive manufacturing environment, you will supervise the day-to-day operations of the CNC machining and sheet metal fabrication departments, ensuring production targets are achieved safely, efficiently and to the highest quality standards.

This is a hands-on leadership position suited to an experienced manufacturing professional who enjoys developing people, solving production challenges and driving continuous improvement.

The Role

• Supervise the daily operations of the CNC machine shop and sheet metal fabrication areas.
• Lead, motivate and develop a team of machinists, operators and fabricators.
• Plan and prioritise workloads to meet production and customer delivery requirements.
• Monitor productivity, machine utilisation and labour efficiency.
• Ensure components are manufactured accurately and meet required quality standards.
• Coordinate production across CNC machining, punch press and waterjet cutting operations.
• Work closely with Production Planning, Engineering, Quality and Maintenance teams to resolve issues.
• Promote high standards of health and safety throughout the department.
• Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to improve productivity, quality and cost.
• Support employee training, development and skills progression.
• Assist with return-to-work meetings, performance reviews and absence management where required.
• Maintain high standards of housekeeping and workplace organisation, including 5S.
• Support capacity planning and resource allocation to maximise production output.

About You

The successful candidate will ideally have:

• Previous supervisory or team leadership experience within a manufacturing or engineering environment.
• Strong knowledge of CNC machining, including milling and/or turning.
• Experience of sheet metal manufacturing processes such as punch press and waterjet cutting would be advantageous.
• Excellent leadership, communication and people-management skills.
• The ability to prioritise workloads and make effective decisions under pressure.
• Experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings and manufacturing specifications.
• Good knowledge of quality and health & safety requirements.
• A proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement.
• Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles would be advantageous.
