Machine Shop Supervisor
Scope of Role
The (Weekend) Machine Shop Supervisor is responsible for the safe and efficient daily operation of the machine shop. The role involves organizing, coordinating, and supervising employees and processes within the machining department to ensure effective operation that meets safety, quality, and production standards.
Rate of Pay: £30 per hour (13 weeks probationary period CIS / Umbrella)
Shifts: Friday to Sunday, 07:00 - 17:30
Initial training will be conducted over 3 weeks on the day shift (39 hrs, Monday to Thursday, 7 am - 5 pm).
Key Responsibilities
Supervision of Machine Shop Operations
- Oversee daily operations, ensuring productivity, safety, and quality standards are met.
- Monitor project progress, adhering to schedules and adjusting resources as needed.
- Assign tasks based on project requirements, worker skills, and priorities.
- Ensure operators use the Steel Project PLM system for workflow tracking.
Team Management and Development
- Lead, coach, and develop CNC machine operators.
- Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback, and identify training needs.
- Manage staffing levels, including overtime and leave requests.
Quality Control and Assurance
- Ensure inspection processes meet project specifications and standards.
- Address non-conformance issues and collaborate with QA teams.
- Complete Inspection Test Plans (ITPs) accurately and ensure traceability system adherence.
Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance
- Promote safety policies and conduct regular safety inspections.
- Facilitate safety training and ensure compliance with regulations.
Flow of Information and Material
- Coordinate with other departments to ensure smooth material and information flow.
- Establish indicators for material flow management.
Equipment Maintenance and Troubleshooting
- Maintain equipment condition through regular inspections and maintenance.
- Coordinate with maintenance teams for repairs and issues.
Production Planning and Coordination
- Develop and implement production schedules in collaboration with other supervisors and departments.
- Monitor workflow and manage project adjustments.
Documentation and Reporting
- Keep accurate records of production activities, work orders, and quality checks using Steel Projects PLM.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify and implement improvements in processes, equipment utilization, and workforce efficiency.
- Encourage employee input and innovation, applying lean principles.
Communication and Coordination
- Serve as a liaison between staff, management, and stakeholders.
- Participate in meetings and ensure effective handovers with weekday supervisors.
Authorities, Interface, Reporting, and Supervision
- Report to the Manufacturing Manager.
- Interact with the Head of Operations and other senior leaders.
- Liaise with all relevant departments as required.
Skills, Knowledge, and Attributes
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

- Hands-on expertise in CNC machining and shop operations.
Health, Safety, and Environmental Awareness
- IOSH or NEBOSH safety qualification preferred.
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety regulations, including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
- Experience with risk assessments and Job Safety Analysis.
- Attention to detail regarding project specifications and standards such as ISO 1090 and NSSS, and familiarity with ITPs.
