Job summary

OpenAI seeks an Engineering Manager to lead the Guardian team in London, owning the engineering strategy for production systems that evaluate agent behavior and identify risk, with action-oriented safeguards and minimal user friction.

This builder-manager role combines hands-on coding with people leadership, setting direction, coaching engineers, and shaping architecture while contributing code when highly impactful. You will partner with research and product teams to scale safety across OpenAI.

Qualifications

• Significant experience leading engineering teams shipping complex, high-stakes production systems end to end.
• Experience with AI agents or large language models in a core product or serious project.
• Strong product-engineering judgment balancing safety, usability, speed, and reliability.
• Ability to partner with research teams, translate findings into engineering plans, and communicate across tech disciplines.

Responsibilities

• Lead, hire, and develop a London-based team of engineers working across agent safety, backend systems, applied AI, and product infrastructure.
• Set the technical roadmap for Auto-review and the Guardian platform, balancing safety, product utility, latency, and reliability.
• Build production systems that evaluate agent actions in real time, detect harmful behavior, and support safe recovery or escalation paths.
• Improve how oversight systems understand user intent, environmental context, permissions, and personalization signals while protecting privacy and avoiding friction.
• Partner with alignment researchers to turn prototypes and evaluations into scalable product capabilities.
• Work across Product, Security, Infrastructure, and other engineering teams to integrate Guardian capabilities into agent experiences throughout OpenAI.
• Establish rigorous evaluation and operational practices, including adversarial testing, failure analysis, monitoring, and metrics for safety performance.
