This is a 10 PA consultant post in Elderly Care Medicine to cover the maternity leave of an existing Consultant at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading.

This is a rotational post between Interface Geriatrics and one of our Acute Elderly Care Wards. This post will also involve a commitment to an outpatient clinic (movement disorders, general elderly care, falls or complex pre-operative assessment). The post will also include participation in the Elderly Care Physician on call rota at approximately 1:16.

The successful applicant will work alongside other consultants and with a team of resident doctors providing high quality care for older people with complex medical issues. As a forward thinking and adaptable department, we would welcome applications from candidates wishing to work less than full time.

Main duties of the job

To provide, with colleagues, Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment service for frail older patients admitted under the care of the Elderly Care team.

Support the provision of the Interface Geriatrics liaison service for frail older patients in the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Short Stay Unit (SSU) and the Emergency Department.

Ensure continuity of care for older people admitted to AMU and SSU; enabling patients to receive specialist consultant care throughout their stay in the acute areas.

To manage patients on an acute Elderly Care ward, working closely with colleagues in the multidisciplinary team and providing consultant support to the medical team.

Enhance and support one of our subspecialty services, with input into Surgical Liaison, Movement Disorders, Falls or General Geriatrics clinics.

Prospective cover for each other's annual leave will be shared equally between the consultant team and often involves cover of the inpatient wards.

Active participation in monthly clinical governance meetings within the department.

Participation and involvement in meetings and other business in the elderly care service.

Responsibility for the educational supervision and clinical supervision of trainee doctors, and participation in the training of medical students and student physician associates.
