Locum Consultant Obstetrician

The Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a Locum Obstetric Consultant to join a team of 27 other Obstetric and Gynaecology Consultants in our busy secondary care Trust.

Main duties of the job

1. Attend antenatal clinics.
2. Manage caesarean section lists.
3. Cover Resident Labour Ward Days and Nights with Tier 1 & Tier 2 doctors.
4. Provide flexible sessions based on your skills and abilities.
5. Develop enhanced clinical skills, especially in the assessment and management of acutely ill patients.
6. Work effectively within a multi-professional team.
7. Deliver clinical and quality targets as agreed with clinical teams and commissioners.
8. Follow patients throughout their clinical pathways.

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) is the main provider of acute hospital services for approximately half a million people in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, and mid Wales.

Our main locations are the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) in Shrewsbury, both providing a wide range of acute hospital services including emergency care, outpatient services, diagnostics, inpatient medical care, and critical care.

Plans are underway to transform local hospital services to ensure high-quality care, secure funding, and develop state-of-the-art facilities at both sites, benefiting staff and patients alike.

Job responsibilities

A formal job plan will be agreed upon within 3 months of starting, in collaboration with the Clinical Director and colleagues. The full-time plan is based on a 10 PA working week, including clinical work, teaching, research, and managerial responsibilities. The plan is reviewed annually and includes commitments aligned with service improvements and strategic priorities. It typically comprises:

• 8.5 Programmed Activities (PAs) of Direct Clinical Care, covering clinical activity and emergency work.
• 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs), including risk management, CPD, audit, teaching, and research.

The allocation may be adjusted based on service demands.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• MBBS or equivalent.
• Advanced Labour Ward Practice ATSM or equivalent experience.
• Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT/CESR.

Entry Criteria

• Evidence of achievement of GMC standards in Good Medical Practice.
• Ability to independently perform all obstetric skills, including complex C-sections, instrumental delivery, 3/4th degree repairs, MROP, and CTG interpretation.
