Job description
Locum Consultant in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Intensive Care

This is an advert for the position of Locum Consultant in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Intensive Care. The successful applicant will join our current establishment of Cardiothoracic Anaesthetists.

The Trust provides tertiary cardiothoracic facilities for the 1.6 million people of Lancashire and South Cumbria. The Trust executive team and divisional board are committed to supporting cardiothoracic services and have recently created a new division for the tertiary services.

The department of Cardiothoracic Surgery provides services for adult patients throughout the NW region. The Lancashire Cardiac Centre was commissioned in July 2006 and is one of our four regional centres for Cardiothoracic surgery. It houses catheter labs, four operating theatres and 20 critical care beds, together with associated ward beds and dedicated educational and research facilities. A CT scanner has been sited within the wing recently.

As a department we provide anaesthetic cover for minimally invasive mitral and aortic valve surgery, major aortic work, routine cardiac and thoracic procedures as well as TAVI, device extraction/implants and electrophysiology work. There are plans to extend our footprint to include a hybrid lab, robotic thoracic surgery and expansion of cardiology and primary PCI service.

Applicants must be fully registered with the GMC or be on the speciality register, have FRCA or equivalent and demonstrate competence in transoesophageal echocardiography.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • MB ChB or equivalent
  • FRCA or equivalent
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register or eligible for inclusion within 6 months of interview date
  • Full registration with the GMC
Skills
  • Excellent communication skills - both oral and written.
  • Effective teaching skills - recognised as Clinical Supervisors
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload and to delegate responsibility and supervise staff.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire a multi-disciplinary team and work sensitively within teams and across organisations
  • Involvement and evidence of implementation of service development and managing change in a healthcare setting
  • Leadership skills - ability to take responsibility, show leadership and make decisions
  • Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia at advanced (or equivalent) level. Transoesophageal echocardiography Cardiothoracic Critical Care
  • Computer and IT skills
  • Educational qualification or working towards.
  • Fellowship in Cardiothoracic anaesthesia
Management Skills
  • Awareness of NHS organisation and core values of NHS
