Applications are invited for a 10 PA Locum Consultant position in Gastroenterology and General Medicine at Whittington Health. This locum post has been developed to cover for a staff member on long-term leave and to address the growing demand in gastroenterology services.
Our department is thriving and expanding, with increasing outpatient and endoscopy referrals. We aim to deliver a first-class gastroenterology service in North London and meet government targets. We conduct regular audits to ensure high-quality service provision.
We operate a four-room unit opened in 2007 in the Day Treatment Centre. Currently, we run 40 lists per week, including dedicated upper GI and colonoscopy lists. Recent approval has allowed us to utilize the fourth endoscopy room to meet expanding demand, working closely with neighboring organizations. We are also a JAG-accredited site.
The department is a core service within the Medical Division, treating approximately 4,000 new outpatients annually, along with 500 inpatient cases and over 8,500 endoscopies.
The appointee will report to the Chief Executive and Medical Director and is expected to work within the GMC’s “Good Medical Practice” guidelines.
The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic doctor, fully accredited in general medicine and gastroenterology. We seek a locum consultant who complements our existing team skills. Commitment to providing excellent patient care and developing improved management systems is essential. Experience in teaching and outpatient clinic re-engineering would be advantageous. ERCP skills are not required. The appointee will be involved in teaching, audits, and departmental management.
The job plan comprises 10 programmed activities, with no GIM on-call or acute medicine duties. There will be a rotating ward month with ward rounds three times weekly and adjustments to DCC schedules accordingly. The timetable is indicative and may be subject to change after discussion with the successful candidate.
The appointee will have access to administrative space, IT facilities, and secretarial support. Further details of the timetable will be discussed upon appointment.

The appointee will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including acting as an examiner, and support research activities. All consultants are responsible for patient care, departmental administration, and ongoing professional development, including annual appraisals and job planning. They will also oversee junior staff, participate in clinical audits, and engage in research aligned with the Trust’s strategy. Opportunities to apply for honorary academic titles are available, supporting teaching and research roles.
