Job summary

Boeing is hiring a Linux Engineer to join the Infrastructure Team in the UK. The role focuses on day‑to‑day support and maintenance of the Red Hat Linux estate, with emphasis on RHEL8/9, OpenShift, and automation to deliver secure, scalable infrastructure for MoD IS programs.

The successful candidate will patch, upgrade, and automate across the Linux estate, monitor service requests and changes, and collaborate with other teams to improve operational efficiency. On‑call duties are required.

Qualifications

  • UK security clearance required or able to obtain.
  • Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8/9 administration.
  • Experience upgrading and configuring OpenShift clusters at scale.
  • Familiarity with container monitoring tools and metrics.
  • Strong troubleshooting and performance tuning skills.
  • Experience with automation toolchains (Ansible, Ansible Tower, GitLab/Jenkins).
  • Ability to work with cross‑functional teams and perform on‑call duties.

This post is for a Linux Engineer to join the Infrastructure Team and will be jointly responsible for the day to day support and maintenance of the Redhat Linux server estate. The team provide support to multiple programmes of work, including Ministry of Defence Information Services (MoD IS).

This is a hands‑on role whereby the successful candidate will need to have experience in RHEL 8 and 9 operating systems with an appreciation of other related Infrastructure technologies including networking, storage, Virtualization and HCI platforms. There will be the requirement to work with other teams to ensure the smooth delivery of Projects and identify opportunities for improvement through automation techniques.

This includes monitoring the Service Management tool for Incidents, Problems, Service Requests and Change tasks to ensure we are improving the quality and adherence to contractual SLA and KPI requirements of the programme within Boeing Defence UK (BDUK).

Responsibilities
  • RHEL8 & 9 enterprise implementation and support.
  • Perform patching, software implementations, and upgrades to our Linux estate.
  • Support the delivery of automated Infrastructure
  • Perform and automate patching and monitoring activities
  • Work closely with other teams across the business to improve efficiency.
  • Fault diagnosis including problem statements and mitigation planning.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to be part of a 24x7 on‑call team and provide extended hours support via a team Rota.
  • Service and application Migration activities (RHEL & OCP)
  • Provide input and design review to ensure best practice implementation of container platforms and automation toolchains.
  • Being on the On‑call rota being on‑call roughly 1 in 5.
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
  • Ability to gain UK SC clearance
  • Hands on experience with OpenShift upgrades, installations, and configuration. (ideally managed large scale migration and deployments)
  • Knowledge of container monitoring tools and metrics.
  • Troubleshooting and performance tuning experience.
  • Experience of automation techniques and toolchains (Ansible, Ansible Tower, Gitlab Jenkins)
  • Experience in a UNIX and Redhat [RHEL8 & RHEL 9] administration role.
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
  • DevOps/CI/CD process architecture/engineering experience
  • Containerisation experience (Openshift, Docker, Podman)
  • Ansible Automation Platform (AAP)
  • Redhat Certification RHSA or RHCE
  • Fluency in at least once scripting language such as Ruby, PowerShell, Python or Java.
  • Experience of working within a secure and high availability environmentd.
