Job description

About The Role

As the M25 Lighting Supervisor for Balfour Beatty, you hold overall responsibility for the successful delivery of all maintenance works across your geographical area, serving as the primary point of contact for shift-based operations. Leading a team of lighting operatives and subcontractors, you ensure efficient supervision, safety, and quality for all lighting network activity. Your core operational duties involve the end-to-end management of routine and non-routine lighting works, which includes pre-scouting lane closure areas, inspecting roadside defects to determine exact rectification requirements, and participating in the development of an achievable Annual Maintenance Plan. You ensure sufficient resources are in place to deliver all works safely and on time, while securing all necessary information and raising and managing essential permits prior to commencement.

To maintain strict safety compliance, you review, assess, and brief technical method statements, delivering task briefings that outline methodology, hazards, and control measures, followed by detailed end-of-shift debriefs to log lessons learned. You hold accountability for your team's administrative discipline by supporting the use of mobile data devices for accurate record-keeping.

Furthermore, you oversee routine vehicle checks, maintain accurate driving records, and manage vehicle or plant defect reporting in strict alignment with Connect Plus Services (CPS) procedures to drive continuous operational improvement and keep the network resilient.

  • Ensure efficient supervision of all work activities, including that of subcontractors.
  • Ensure all required information is available prior to works commencing, including raising and managing permits where necessary.
  • Ensure sufficient resources are in place to deliver all works activities safely and productively.
  • Prepare and deliver task briefings to operatives and subcontractors, outlining methodology, hazards, risks, and control measures.
  • Supervise activities on site to ensure works are carried out safely, proactively, and productively.
  • Ensure digital data is captured to all relevant data platforms for works activities.
  • Undertake detailed debriefs at the end of each shift to identify issues and incorporate lessons learned into future activities.
  • Support the use of data devices amongst the team to ensure accurate input for reporting and record-keeping.
  • Support routine vehicle checks, maintain accurate driving records, and manage vehicle/plant defect reporting and rectification in line with CPS procedures.
  • Participate in the development of the Annual Maintenance plan to ensure it is accurate and achievable.
  • Raise and manage permits as required.
Who we're looking for
  • Experience of working with the Lighting/Electrical Contractor.
  • Able to work in different areas of the network and be flexible on working approaches.
  • Demonstrable people management skills.
  • Relevant electrical qualifications.
  • Relevant SSSTS/SMSTS qualifications (or suitable alternative).
  • Previous practical experience within a Street Lighting position.
  • Knowledge of NHSS8 (preferable HEA quality supervisor).
  • Practical ability to understand and use operational equipment.
  • Holder of relevant CSCS Card.
  • Knowledge and understanding of health and safety legislation relating to highways.
  • Numerate and literate to carry out the functions of the role.
  • Good computer Skills (Microsoft Office).
  • Hold current UK driving license (Preferably LGV Class C).
  • Experience in the delivery of a highway’s maintenance operations or similar transferable experience.
