Markel is seeking a Development Underwriter for Life Sciences to own a growing UK portfolio across broker networks. The role is hybrid with flexibility to work from Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham or London and involves front-line market engagement rather than desk-only underwriting.

The successful candidate will combine technical underwriting with strong relationship-building, identify opportunities, and help shape the Life Sciences proposition while delivering profitable growth for the portfolio.

Qualifications

• Underwriting experience in Commercial Combined, P&C, Financial Lines or Life Sciences.
• Strong broker development and relationship-building skills.
• Commercial awareness and trading capability.
• Ability to influence underwriting appetite and outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Developing and managing broker relationships across UK markets.
• Creating and converting new business opportunities.
• Underwriting Life Sciences risks within delegated authority.
• Becoming a recognised specialist within your broker network.
• Building a robust pipeline of opportunities and maintaining CRM activity.
• Working closely with underwriting colleagues to deliver broker outcomes.
• Providing market insight and helping shape future underwriting appetite.
• Representing Markel at broker meetings, market events and industry forums.
• Supporting delivery of growth and profitability objectives across the portfolio.
