Job summary

BCP Council is looking for a Fleet Technician in Bournemouth to service, repair, and maintain their vehicle fleet. This role requires experience in a commercial vehicle workshop and an HGV licence. Ideal candidates will have strong problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate effectively.

Job description

Starting salary for this role is £34,434 (pro rata for part-time colleagues).

Role Purpose

To service, repair and maintain the Council’s fleet across the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole area ensuring they meet the legal standards set by the relevant governing and enforcing bodies and to support the provision of efficient vehicles to front line services.

Main Responsibilities
  • Carry out thorough examinations, inspections and reports on the condition, roadworthiness, and safety of all vehicles or equipment.
  • Carry out preventative maintenance and routine servicing within specified or scheduled periods.
  • Use the necessary tools, equipment and facilities safely and efficiently while maintaining a high standard of workmanship.
  • Comply with all Health and Safety, Risk Assessments and Safe Working Practices as required and in line with statutory requirements.
  • Undertake other duties as may be required from time to time commensurate to the grade of the post.
  • Participate in staff training programmes related to your role and deliver relevant training as required to maintain and enhance skills and knowledge needed to meet service delivery requirements.
  • Be an active part of a team providing a full repair and maintenance service for the Council’s mixed vehicle fleet.
  • Always ensure compliance with the Council’s Operators Licence.
The Ideal Candidate
  • Experience working in a busy Commercial Vehicle Workshop.
  • HGV Licence.
  • Previous experience in fault diagnosis, repair and maintenance of a municipal fleet, including refuse collection vehicles, road sweepers, light commercial vehicles, tractors, trailers and vans.
  • Relevant industry recognised qualification as a Technician (e.g., City & Guilds or NVQ Level 3 or equivalent).
  • Capable of working effectively within a team and on own initiative.
  • Ability to electronically compile reports of defects, repairs carried out and parts used accurately.
  • Flexible and willing to undertake various ranges of tasks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to a diverse range of people.
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Proactive attitude.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise own work.
  • Motivated.
