Job description

Legal Counsel: Property & Acquisitions (England & Wales Qualified)

  • Perm
  • Theale Hybrid (2-3 days per week)
  • You would need to be able to travel to Manchester

Main Purpose of the role:

To support the property function of the legal team through providing assistance with all types of property transactions from the acquisition, renewal and upgrades/alterations of sites through to managing the service of statutory notices and issuing claims where required to protect the estate. There will be a substantial element of legal supplier management involved as well as finance control and innovation to the legal process.

There will be an emphasis on providing dedicated legal support to the Acquisition project. The successful candidate would be aligned with the demand leads of the Acquisition team and would be responsible for managing a volume of transactions and litigious matters with legal suppliers. The role would report directly into Senior Property Counsel within the Legal & Compliance Team.

Role Responsibilities

Consensual Deal Support:

  • To rapidly build upon knowledge of telecoms leases within the role, given the company's agreements are centered around the Electronic Communications Code (2017). Prior experience of the Code would be advantageous.
  • A part of the role will be in assisting with the management of these transactions through weekly counsel sessions with our legal suppliers and acquisition ADMs, reporting on the same and providing front line support to legal escalations arising in this space.

Litigation Support:

  • To gain a thorough comprehension of the statutory process pursuant to the Electronic Communications Code and LTA 1954; to be able to advise on the correct course of action from serving statutory notices, dealing with pre-claim matters and the issue of proceedings to unlock problematic sites.

Legal Supplier Management:

  • The legal work is outsourced we rely heavily on our relationship with our legal suppliers to ensure that work streams are instructed and dealt with in a manner and at a cost that is satisfactory. As such, we foster close working relationships with our legal supplier teams which require daily management and support. The successful candidate will be heavily involved in this and will require strong interpersonal and project management skills.

General Legal Team Functions:

  • As part of a busy Legal & Compliance Team, there are departmental tasks that arise and form part of the regular work stream; from organising and attending meetings with suppliers, collaborating with the wider team and recording minutes, to providing legal training to other factions within the business. This role therefore requires a strong team player who is enthusiastic and willing to immerse themselves within the team culture.

What is needed for the role:

  • A qualified solicitor with experience in commercial property and litigation from a well-regarded city / regional firm or experience working within a busy in-house legal team
  • A solicitor admitted to the role with a current practicing certificate.
  • 2-3 years' PQ experience in commercial conveyancing transactions, particularly relating to landlord and tenant matters.
  • Experience with litigious matters under the Electronic Communications Code and LTA 1954
  • Background in practicing Commercial Property Law
  • Robust understanding of Landlord/Tenant law.
  • Keen eye for detail, as well as an enthusiastic and proactive approach.
  • A collaborative team player with excellent organizational skills.
  • Responsive and approachable; able to build strong working relationships.
  • Ability to make decisions quickly.
  • Good commercial awareness with ability to deliver clear advice.
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Using a variety of formats with colleagues and others outside the business
