Job description

Luma Education Recruitment is recruiting for a dedicated Learning Support Assistant to join an established and supportive specialist school in Totnes, Devon.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to build valuable experience working with children and young people, particularly those interested in developing a career within SEN, SEND, SEMH, education, psychology, youth work or specialist support.

The role is long-term, with potential for the right candidate to progress into a permanent position through a temp-to-perm arrangement.

You will be part of an experienced school team, supporting young people with their learning, development, confidence and independence. The role also includes an outreach and community element, making it particularly varied and rewarding.

Alongside supporting learning within the school, you may accompany young people on activities, days out, visits to local facilities or trips into the community, helping them develop practical skills and greater independence.

The role

As a Learning Support Assistant, you will provide positive, consistent and individualised support to young people with a range of additional needs.

  • Supporting young people with learning and educational activities
  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support
  • Supporting pupils with SEN, SEND and SEMH needs
  • Building positive and trusting relationships
  • Supporting confidence, communication and emotional development
  • Encouraging independence and practical life skills
  • Supporting young people within the wider community
  • Accompanying pupils on activities, trips and days out
  • Supporting visits to shops, local facilities and community settings
  • Encouraging young people to try new experiences
  • Helping pupils develop confidence in everyday situations
  • Working alongside teachers and experienced education professionals
  • Providing patient, consistent and encouraging support throughout the day

The outreach element makes this an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys a varied role and wants to gain experience both inside and outside the classroom.

A great opportunity to build your experience

This position can be particularly well suited to graduates and early-career candidates looking to gain meaningful, hands-on experience working with young people.

Whether you have recently completed a degree in Psychology, Education, Childhood Studies, Youth Work or a related subject, or you are looking to move into education from another background, the role provides an opportunity to develop practical experience within an established specialist setting.

You will gain a greater understanding of:

  • SEN and SEND
  • SEMH and emotional wellbeing
  • Autism and ADHD
  • Behaviour and communication
  • Child and adolescent development
  • Individual learning needs
  • Supporting confidence and independence
  • Building positive professional relationships
  • Different approaches to supporting young people

The experience can be particularly valuable for those considering future careers in education, educational psychology, psychology, counselling, youth work, mental health, SEND or specialist education.

For the right person, the long-term nature of the position and potential temp-to-perm route also provide the opportunity to establish yourself within a school, develop your skills and explore your longer-term career direction.

About you

We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic about working with children and young people and is keen to develop their experience.

Previous school experience is beneficial but not essential. Relevant experience through university placements, volunteering, tutoring, mentoring, youth work, care, residential settings or working with children would all be considered.

You should be:

  • Passionate about supporting young people
  • Patient, empathetic and approachable
  • Interested in learning, development and behaviour
  • Confident building positive relationships
  • Reliable, proactive and willing to get involved
  • Comfortable providing 1:1 support
  • Keen to learn from experienced education professionals
  • Confident supporting young people in the community
  • A full UK driving licence holder with access to a vehicle

Most importantly, we're looking for someone with the right attitude, enthusiasm and commitment to learn.

What we offer
  • £110-£140 per day, depending on experience
  • Full-time, long-term opportunity
  • Potential for temp-to-perm progression
  • Established and supportive specialist school
  • Experience across SEN, SEND and SEMH
  • Combination of classroom, learning and outreach support
  • Excellent opportunity for graduates and early-career candidates
  • Valuable hands-on experience working with young people
  • Opportunity to develop your professional skills and CV
  • Dedicated consultant support from Luma Education Recruitment
  • Weekly pay
  • Access to further SEN, SEMH and education opportunities
