Job summary

Barnwood Park School in Gloucester is seeking a Learning Support Assistant to support learning across subjects and year groups, working with individuals and small groups to create a focused, inclusive environment.

Qualifications

• Level 2 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning or equivalent; or substantial relevant experience.
• Evidence of personal commitment to CPD

Responsibilities

• Provide speech and language interventions
• Provide in-class support for identified students or small groups
• Assist in whole class management through modelling effective behaviour
• Develop and lead small group work supporting SEMH and related paperwork
• Assist in producing teaching materials and differentiating tasks
• Provide after school support for identified students as required
• Provide regular feedback to teachers and SENDCo
• Support students with social, emotional and mental health difficulties
• Record progress using appropriate systems

About the Role

As a Learning Support Assistant, you will support learning across a range of subjects and year groups. You will work with individual students and small groups, help to create a focused learning environment, and contribute to the wider pastoral and inclusion work of the school.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• To provide speech and language interventions
• To provide in-class support for identified individual students or small groups of students (e.g. 4-5 students), including specialist subject support as appropriate
• Under the direction of the class teacher, to assist in the management of the whole class through the overt modelling of effective behaviour management techniques
• Under the direction of a class teacher, SENCO, to develop and lead small group work for identified students supporting their ability to manage the symptoms of their SEMH, including anxiety as well as to contribute to the appropriate paperwork for these groups
• To assist in the production of teaching and learning materials for students, including differentiating the materials
• To provide after school support for identified students as required
• To provide regular feedback to the class teacher and to the SENDCo or the relevant line manager
• To provide support for students with social, emotional and mental health difficulties
• To use appropriate systems for recording the progress of students with learning difficulties

We're Looking For Someone Who:

• Holds at least 5 GCSE’s or equivalent, which must include at least a Grade C/4 in Maths and English
• Completed Level 2 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning, Teaching, Assistance or an equivalent qualification directly relevant to classroom learning support, child development, SEND or education; or recent, substantial experience directly supporting children or young people's learning in a school, college or specialist educational setting
• Evidence of personal commitment to CPD
• Successful professional or voluntary experience working directly with children or young people
• Basic understanding of child development and learning
• The ability to work constructively as part of a team, follow line management structures and understand classroom roles and your own position within those responsibilities
• The ability to take the initiative to support students presenting with a range of SEND
• Ability to work flexibly, contribute observations and ideas to individual support plans, and implement agreed strategies that promote resilience and independence
• To show commitment to the SEND team to ensure that it continues to develop strength and expertise across the broad areas of SEND
• To be able to form empathetic relationships with young people and be able to communicate their needs effectively to other professionals
• Commitment to high standards and expectations
• Experience of working with children who present with anxiety and other social, emotional and mental health difficulties
• Excellent communication with children and parents/carers.
• Good behaviour management
• Able to adapt activities to suit the child
• Possess strong interpersonal skills
• Be dependable, able to follow instruction and respond to management directions
• Have a willingness to extend skills through appropriate training
• Have good working ICT Knowledge
• Committed to the safeguarding of children
