Job description

Learning Support Assistant

Location: Cambridge

Salary: A£16,802 - A£17,296 per annum

Job Type: Temporary, 18 months (February 2025 - July 2026)

The Perse School Cambridge is one of the country's leading independent co-educational day schools for children aged 3-18, who attend their Pelican, Prep or Upper. Their aim is to be a leading employer of choice, striving to be a school where staff feel valued, respected, and motivated.

The Role

The post offers an exciting opportunity for an applicant to provide 1:1 learning support primarily to a specific child, while also working with small groups as required. Initially, the successful candidate will work at the Pelican and from September 2025 they will work at the Prep.

Responsibilities:

  1. Support the children's wellbeing and educational progress.
  2. Support children assigned to you and liaise with teaching staff about their understanding and progress.
  3. Plan and prepare resources for sessions as required.
  4. Deliver 1:1 or small group support within the classroom.
  5. Ensure children's personal or educational targets or Educational Health Care Plan are supported.
  6. Keep parents informed, where appropriate, of pupil progress to enable them to best support their child at home.
  7. Ensure that all school resources are maintained in good order.

Cover:
  • The Learning Support Assistant may be asked to help out with staff cover arrangements as directed by the Deputy Head.

  • Pastoral Care:
    1. Take a proactive role in the pastoral life of the children in the school, working with classroom teachers, promoting the general progress and well-being of all pupils in our care and implementing the School's Behaviour and Discipline policy.
    2. Participate in appropriate training with a pastoral focus and comply with the school policy on Safeguarding and Child Protection.
    3. Assist children with personal care (feeding, toileting, changing clothes and cleaning up) as necessary.

    Duties:
    1. Play a role in the School's supervision of pupils at playtimes and be fully aware of the School rules and guidance for staff related to best practice for supervision of pupils.
    2. Report promptly any instances where the safety or welfare of a member of the School community may be at risk.

    Meetings and Events:
    1. Participate in staff meetings as required.
    2. Attend assemblies, as directed by the Head.
    3. Attend school functions or events at the Pelican as requested by the Head.

    Skills and Qualifications:
    1. Patience, a 'can do' attitude, and the adaptability needed to work successfully in a 3-11 school environment.
    2. A passionate advocate for helping pupils with special educational needs and disabilities achieve their true potential.
    3. Some understanding of ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and other specific learning difficulties.
    4. Excellent inter-personal and organisational skills as well as the flexibility to deal with a range of tasks.
    5. Clear and effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with a confident and positive manner.
    6. The desire to work with children and young adults of a range of ages.
    7. Confidence to interact with and support children age-appropriately.
    8. Empathy for pupils, staff, and the school community.
    9. The ability to work effectively both as part of a team and also independently.
    10. The ability to work collaboratively and supportively with colleagues within school and with parents.
    11. The ability to follow an educational/health care plan.
    12. The ability to manage commitments and deadlines.
    13. Strong ICT skills to conduct administrative tasks efficiently.
    14. Commitment to continuing personal and professional development.
