Job summary

ST. FRANCIS’ CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL in Handsworth, Birmingham is seeking a Learning Mentor to support pupils' social, emotional and academic development. The role runs 8.15am-4.00pm, pro rata for part-time, with start date November 2026 or as soon as possible.

You will work with pupils, families and staff to help children overcome barriers to learning, promote attendance and wellbeing, and contribute to safeguarding and inclusion in a dedicated Catholic ethos.

Qualifications

• Experience of working with children in a school or similar setting.
• Patient, compassionate and able to build trusting relationships.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Able to support children to regulate their emotions and make positive choices.
• Able to work independently and as part of a team.
• Committed to inclusion and ensuring every child succeeds.

Responsibilities

• Provide pastoral support to individual pupils and small groups.
• Support children with social, emotional and behavioural needs.
• Build positive relationships with pupils, families and staff.
• Help improve attendance, punctuality and engagement with learning.
• Deliver intervention programmes to support emotional wellbeing, resilience and self-esteem.
• Monitor pupil progress and maintain accurate records.
• Liaise with external agencies and professionals where appropriate.
• Promote safeguarding and pupil welfare at all times
• Being a mentor during dinner time in order to maximise participation and help keep good order
• Some class support work to help motivate and engage children - especially in Phase 2 and 3
