JOB OVERVIEW
This is a rewarding opportunity for a Learning Mentor to provide pastoral care, additional learning support, coaching and guidance for young people in an education and training setting.
Working as the Learning Mentor, you will support learners with barriers such as attendance, punctuality, behaviour, personal challenges and progression, helping them stay engaged and achieve their goals.
As the Learning Mentor, you will work closely with tutors, internal teams, referral agencies, local authorities and external partners to provide joined-up support that improves learner progress, achievement and positive destinations.
DUTIES
Your duties as the Learning Mentor include:
- Provide Learner Support: Manage a caseload of learners and deliver tailored pastoral care, learning support, coaching and mentoring within the organisation’s support framework
- Improve Attendance and Progress: Monitor attendance, punctuality, retention and positive destinations, providing timely interventions to support learner success
- Develop Support Plans: Create, record and monitor individual mentoring, coaching and support plans with SMART targets
- Support Personal Development: Plan and deliver activities that develop personal, social and employability skills for learners
- Work with Tutors and Teams: Liaise with tutors and relevant staff to ensure mentoring targets support learner progress and achievement
- Build External Links: Maintain relationships with referral agencies, schools, local authorities, employers, parents, carers, social services and community partners
- Provide Progression Guidance: Support learners moving into employment, apprenticeships, further education or training
- Maintain Compliance: Keep accurate learner records and complete administration in line with quality, funding and audit requirements
- Promote Safeguarding: Follow safeguarding, health and safety, equality and diversity policies and promote a safe, inclusive learning environment
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
ESSENTIAL
- Advice and Guidance Level 3 and/or above and/or a relevant learning support qualification
- Experience of working as part of a team and with minimum supervision
- Experience of delivering support to young people and adults with a range of barriers to their success
- Excellent communication and listening skills
- Ability to build supportive, effective and professional relationships with learners, partner agencies, stakeholders and employers
- Experience of managing challenging behaviour
- Experience of mentoring or coaching young people and/or adults to achieve education and training success
- Experience of setting SMART targets, recording and monitoring individual support plans
- Experience of planning and delivering support sessions and activities to support personal, social and employability skills development
- Highly methodical and organised, with confident IT skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office packages
- Ability to resolve conflict positively, make objective judgements and motivate young people to participate
