Job summary

Career Choices Dewis Gyrfa Ltd is seeking a Learning Mentor for a mainstream college in Merseyside to provide academic and pastoral support across vocational departments.

You will work with teaching staff to identify students at risk, build confidence, support attendance and study skills, and mentor individuals or small groups to help progression. This is a full-time role with exposure to diverse vocational subjects and a focus on helping students engage and achieve their goals.

Qualifications

• Experience working with young people in education, youth work, mentoring, pastoral support or similar settings.

Responsibilities

• Provide academic and pastoral support to students across vocational departments.
• Work alongside teaching staff within practical environments such as Mechanics, Construction, Hair & Beauty and other vocational subjects.
• Build positive and professional relationships with students and become a trusted source of support.
• Identify students who may be struggling with their learning, engagement, attendance or personal circumstances.
• Help students remain focused, motivated and engaged with their studies.
• Provide 1:1 and small-group mentoring where appropriate.
• Support students with organisation, time management, study skills and completing coursework.
• Help students overcome barriers that may impact their progress or achievement.
• Provide encouragement and positive reinforcement to build students' confidence and resilience.
• Support students with their personal development and preparation for employment or further study.
• Monitor attendance, engagement and progress and provide feedback to teaching and pastoral teams.
• Help manage low-level behavioural issues and address concerns before they become barriers to learning.
• Work collaboratively with curriculum, pastoral and support teams to ensure students receive a consistent level of support.
• Encourage students to take responsibility for their learning, behaviour and future progression.

We are currently recruiting for a Learning Mentor to join a mainstream college in Merseyside, working across vocational departments including Mechanics, Construction, Hair & Beauty and other practical subjects.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys working directly with young people and wants to play a key role in supporting their academic progress, personal development, engagement and wellbeing.

The successful candidate will work closely with teaching staff to identify students who may be struggling with their studies, attendance, behaviour, confidence or personal circumstances, providing the additional support and encouragement they need to remain engaged and achieve their goals.

The Role

Who Are We Looking For?

This role would suit someone with experience working with young people in education, youth work, mentoring, pastoral support or similar settings.

You may currently be working as a:

• Pastoral Support Worker
• Learning Support Assistant
• Teaching Assistant
• SEN Teaching Assistant
• Behaviour Support Worker
• Youth Worker
• Progress Coach
• Student Support Worker
• Education Support Worker Experience working within a Further Education or vocational environment would be advantageous, but is not essential.

We are particularly interested in candidates who are confident working with young people who may be disengaged, lacking confidence, struggling academically or experiencing personal or behavioural difficulties.

You will need to be approachable, resilient and proactive, with the ability to build strong relationships while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
