Job summary

The Royal College of Art is seeking a Lead Technical Instructor for the Future Materials Workshops at the Kensington Campus. You will lead a small technical team, manage day-to-day operations and deliver high-level technical instruction in moulding, casting and related processes.

You will oversee equipment, health and safety, budgeting, and collaboration with students and staff to advance research and practice in innovative material development.

Qualifications

  • Experience managing and administering for the effective day-to-day operations within a similar workshop space.
  • Strong background and technical expertise in sculpting, mould making, casting, silicones and resin, and composite materials.
  • Experience providing highly skilled technical assistance, guidance and instruction for a wide variety of making processes to support complex project development.
  • Ability to motivate, lead and line manage a small team of technicians ensuring provision of specialist equipment and work areas.
  • Interest in Biofabrication and future material development.
  • Forward-thinking with focus on innovation and technician development.
  • Commitment to high-quality outcomes and collaborative learning.

Responsibilities

  • Based onsite in the Future Materials Workshops at the RCA Kensington campus, managing the space and line-managing a small technical team.
  • Be an expert in moulding and casting with extensive knowledge in sculpting, art fabrication and production.
  • Ensure provision and availability of specialist equipment and work areas to support academic delivery, student learning and research.
  • Plan, organise and deliver high-level technical instruction, demonstrations and guidance, while supporting technicians.
  • Lead health and safety standards and best practices across the workshops.
  • Handle budgeting, purchasing, task allocation, supervision and performance reviews.
  • Collaborate with Masters students to support independent research and experimental work.
