Job summary

Manchester Digital is seeking a Lead Site Reliability Engineer to lead a team of SREs and provide technical leadership across the design, delivery and reliability of critical services.

You will work with product managers, architects and engineers to shape platform strategy, implement observability, and drive CI/CD improvements while maintaining security and resilience. This is a hands‑on leadership role with on‑call responsibilities and a focus on reducing operational burden.

Qualifications

• Experience leading engineers through coaching or line management.
• Strong experience applying modern SRE/DevOps practices within cloud environments (AWS/Azure/GCP).
• Experience designing, operating and improving reliable distributed systems with focus on reliability and user impact.
• Experience infrastructure‑as‑code and automation with Terraform, CloudFormation or equivalent.
• Strong communication and stakeholder skills, ability to influence engineering practices and explain complex concepts clearly.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop a team of Site Reliability Engineers with direction, coaching and support.
• Provide technical leadership across SRE and DevOps to build reliable, scalable services.
• Design, build and maintain cloud infrastructure using infrastructure‑as‑code approaches.
• Lead adoption of observability including monitoring, logging, metrics and alerting.
• Help teams define SLIs, SLOs and error budgets for reliability decisions.
• Improve CI/CD and automation for safe, frequent, low‑risk changes.
• Oversee live‑service reliability and incident management with a learning culture.
• Collaborate with product, delivery and architecture to meet user and business needs.
• Coach and mentor engineers and contribute to the wider DDaT engineering community.
• Embed security, resilience and compliance into engineering practices.
