Lead Project Engineer – Solar PV & Storage

Job summary

Elgin is seeking a Senior Project Engineer to lead and grow the Project Engineering function for utility-scale solar PV and BESS projects in the UK. You will divide time 50/50 between people management and hands-on engineering across the full project lifecycle, from development through energisation.

You will set technical standards, mentor engineers, and liaise with development, commercial, grid, legal, and operations teams to ensure value delivery and investment readiness.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering.
• At least 5 years’ experience in utility-scale solar PV and/or BESS projects.
• Experience managing or leading a team of engineers.
• Strong knowledge of PV technology, grid connections, energy yield assessments, shading analysis, MV/HV grid connection procedures, and PV plant installation procedures.

Responsibilities

• Line manage approximately five Project Engineers, including objective setting and performance reviews.
• Conduct regular 1:1s, coaching and mentoring for technical growth.
• Manage workload allocation and resource planning across the PE team.
• Act as escalation point for technical queries and project issues.
• Establish standard templates, checklists, and review processes for engineering outputs.
• Support recruitment and onboarding of new Project Engineers.
• Provide regular reporting on team capacity and project status.
• Coordinate technical development activities and lessons‑learned reviews.
• Foster a culture of technical rigour and cross-functional collaboration.
