Job description

Job Description Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented and experienced Power Electronics Engineer to join GE Power Conversion’s Engineering group working on new technology and contribute to the design and development of our next generation products.
The Lead Power Electronics Engineer will be responsible for leading and designing MW scale Power Electronics Converters products. This is a technical role and will involve working in a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to specify, design, code and validate Power Electronics products used in low voltage & medium voltage MW-scale power electronics converter systems and electrical drives for Marine, Naval, Energy and Industry applications.
Job Description
The Opportunity

The energy transition demands engineering that operates at the frontier — and this role sits right at that edge. As a Lead Power Electronics Engineer within GE Vernova's Power Conversion & Storage business in Rugby, you will shape the design and development of next-generation megawatt (MW)-scale power electronics converter systems. From marine and naval platforms to energy and industrial applications, your work will directly influence products deployed across some of the world's most demanding environments.

This is a senior individual contributor role for an engineer who wants deep technical ownership — and the scope to pursue it.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and deliver converter solutions— specify, design, and document power electronics converter systems to meet complex application requirements, including circuit design, snubber design, gating electronics, and thermal design across a range of semiconductor device technologies (Diodes, Thyristors, IGBTs (Insulated-Gate Bipolar Transistors), IGCTs (Integrated Gate-Commutated Thyristors), MOSFETs (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors), SiC (Silicon Carbide), and GaN (Gallium Nitride)).
  • Model, simulate, and analyse— lead modelling and simulation of power electronic converter systems using tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, PSpice, Mathcad, and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), including thermal studies, EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility), harmonic analysis, and performance optimisation.
  • Verify and validate— lead verification, validation, and testing of low voltage and medium voltage power electronic systems, ensuring designs comply with relevant health and safety standards, international regulations, and class society rules.
  • Provide cross-functional technical support— collaborate with tendering, test, and commissioning teams, and liaise with customers, suppliers, and subcontractors to deliver against project quality, cost, and schedule targets.
  • Advance engineering practice— apply and develop engineering standards, design practices, and analytical tools that raise the bar for MW-scale converter system engineering across the team.
About You

You are an experienced power electronics engineer with strong domain knowledge of MW-scale converter systems and a track record of delivering complex technical solutions from specification through to validation.

Required

  • Degree (BEng, MEng or PhD) in Power Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline — a formal qualification is advantageous, but we are most interested in your total experience and professional achievements.
  • Strong experience in power electronics converter design, including semiconductor device knowledge and associated gating electronics, snubber circuits, and thermal design.
  • Skilled in power electronics simulation and design tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, Mathcad, or equivalent.
  • Eligible to obtain UK Security Clearance (SC).
  • Willingness to travel within the UK and internationally on a short‑term basis.

Preferred

  • Knowledge of power electronics converter control systems and electrical machine control methods.
  • Experience with SAP and Teamcenter PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) systems.
  • Full UK driving licence.
