Job summary

GE Vernova’s UK Centre of Excellence is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to contribute to hands-on development in gas power engineering applications, collaborating across teams and with customers, and supporting critical infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities include turning requirements into specifications, improving design and engineering analysis tools, and coordinating with global teams to deliver on schedule while managing risks.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science / mechanical engineering; master’s degree or higher preferred.
  • Significantly demonstrated experience in developing, enhancing, and supporting physics-based design and engineering analysis tools for industrial or rotating component applications.
  • Significant programming skills in C++, C, Core Java, Python, and Shell scripting, with experience developing reliable, maintainable, and high-performance engineering applications.
  • Hands-on experience with aero engineering concepts, rotating component design workflows, CAD modeling, engineering automation, and physics-based design or analysis tools.
  • Working knowledge of Unix/Solaris environments, software build processes, scripting, debugging, version control, and deployment practices for engineering software.
  • Advanced understanding of data structures, algorithms, computational methods, numerical accuracy, performance optimisation, and scalable software design.
  • Extensive analytical thinking, problem-solving, communication, documentation, and collaboration skills to work effectively with global engineering and cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

  • Work with engineering teams and program managers to identify business needs, define problem statements, and develop functional specifications with clear success metrics, expected productivity gains, and business impact.
  • Translate user requirements into tool development plans, technical tasks, validation steps, and deployment milestones, ensuring traceability from requirement to delivery and measurable closure of committed scope.
  • Upgrade and enhance design and engineering analysis applications for rotating components to improve usability, automation, reliability, execution time, accuracy, and integration with engineering workflows.
  • Manage project scope, schedules, risks, communication, leadership reviews, and team coordination to deliver projects on schedule, within agreed scope, and with timely closure of key risks and action items.
  • Lead application development, testing, validation, release, deployment, support, documentation, and user training, enabling adoption across domestic and global engineering teams and reducing recurring support issues.
  • Coordinate with engineering, manufacturing, sourcing, services, global engineering, ITO/OTR, and systems engineering to align requirements, interfaces, and deployment plans, reducing rework and improving cross-functional execution.

Job Description Summary

Become part of a winning team at our UK Centre of Excellence and a Government strategic facility.. As a Staff Software Engineer, in Gas Power, Steam Services ITR Engineering, you will be responsible for contributing to hands-on development with focus on product development for engineering applications. You will work independently and contribute to the immediate team and to other teams across business. You will also contribute to design discussions. This role involves work for customers who manage critical infrastructure; based on customer requirements it will be necessary to carry out background checks and suitability assessments (e.g. UK Security Clearance (SC)) as part of the hiring process.

Essential Responsibilities
