Job Description Summary
GE’s Power Conversion business, part of GE Vernova, provides electrification systems that are critical to customers’ power and energy needs for their high-performance applications. We work with some of the world’s major energy, maritime and industrial organizations, helping to enable a transition to energy efficiency and decarbonization, including through our specialist motors, drives and control technologies.

The Power Electronics Engineer will be responsible for leading and performing Low voltage and medium voltage power electronics and electrical design tasks on Drive System projects. This is a technical role and will involve working in a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to specify, design, support manufacturing & validation of MW-scale power electronics for Marine, Energy, and Industry applications.
Job Description

In this role you will:

  • Lead the Electrical and Mechanical design of power, control, and cooling, by specifying, designing, and documenting power electronics converters technical solutions to meet specific application requirements.
  • Undertake all aspects of power electronics circuits design, snubber design, gating electronics design, thermal design, electrical etc. This requires semiconductor device domain knowledge (Diodes, Thyristors, IGBTs, GTOs, IGCT, MOSFETS, SiC, GaN, etc).
  • Drives system level understanding for fault level study and protection strategy.
  • Produce Schematics with Eplan (or equivalent), for circuits.
  • Manage bill of material BOMS, for all assemblies, maintaining control with change management process.
  • Maintain requirements, understanding, and delivering against FMEA and lesson learnt.
  • Verification, validation, testing of low voltage & medium voltage power electronic systems, drives/converters/ Inverters of MW range power systems. These will include power electronic inverter full temperature heat run test, EMC, overload, abnormal testing conditions and performance evaluation and optimisation etc. Bu producing clear test methods and capturing and documenting the results.
  • Ensure power electronic system designs comply with the relevant health & safety, international standards, and class society rules.
  • Application of engineering standards and development of design practices.
  • Support attainment of on-time delivery, cost, and quality targets on projects.
  • Provide technical assistance to tendering, test and commissioning teams.
  • Liaison with customers, suppliers, and sub-contractors.

We are looking for a committed and professional individual with:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree, masters or PhD degree in power electronics is desirable.
  • Knowledge of power electronic converter control systems design and analysis.
  • Knowledge of power electronics converter design and electrical machines control methods is desirable.
  • Good semiconductor device domain knowledge and their associated gating electronics & snubber circuits design and thermal design.
  • Sole British citizenship with a valid British Passport (“UK Eyes only”)
  • Willing to travel within UK and overseas for short-term working.
  • Possession of or being capable of obtaining SC level security clearance.

  • Undertake modelling, analysis, and simulation of power electronic converter systems, using standard industrial design tools such as: Matlab, Simulink, PLECS, PSpice, Mathcad, CFD, etc.
  • Ability to multi-task on a variety of projects, adapts to changing circumstances, able to deal with ambiguity making positive use of the opportunities it presents.
  • Able to make prompt, clear decisions. Probes for further information or greater understanding of a problem and produces workable solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills; listens, consults others and communicates proactively.
  • Strong report writing skills; writes clearly and succinctly to meet the needs and understanding of the intended audience.
  • SAP and Teamcenter (PLM) experience.
