Job summary

BBC Group and Public Services in Cardiff is seeking a Lead Data Engineer to lead a six-person team delivering pension system technology and data solutions. You will coach and develop the team, manage data quality, and drive improvements across workflows and member communications.

The role requires hands-on SQL/PL/SQL, experience with Oracle databases, and a strong background in software development, web tech, APIs, GitHub and Jira. Cardiff-based with flexible working discussed at offer stage.

Qualifications

• Proven leader of technical teams with coaching and people management experience.
• Strong communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Expertise in SQL, relational databases (ideally Oracle), data analysis, reporting, and data quality management.
• Experience in software development, translating complex specs into secure, scalable solutions with change control (Jira, GitHub).
• Delivers multiple technology projects with reliability, security and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of six, coaching and supporting wellbeing and performance.
• Own and enhance pension benefit calculation suite (Oracle PL/SQL).
• Manage admin system data ensuring high quality through measurement and remediation.
• Oversee workflows to optimise pension administration processes.
• Own member-facing technology and communications, including self-service portal and letters.
• Deliver pension technology projects and support annual bulk exercises.
• Lead data protection, cyber security and business continuity activities.
