Job summary

Morson Edge (Technology) is seeking a Lead Modelling Software Engineer in Manchester to own modelling and optimisation engines behind our platform. You will combine mathematical modelling, physics and software engineering to deliver production-ready solutions for a Tech for Good / Energy Tech business.

You'll lead and ship models leveraging Python, NumPy/Pandas/SciPy and may contribute to C++ work as the platform evolves, with hands-on coding and technical leadership across the team.

Qualifications

  • Strong Python and mathematical modelling experience.
  • Experience with real-world data and IoT is a plus.
  • Exposure to production-grade software and testing.

Responsibilities

  • Build and improve mathematical models around thermal dynamics and heating behaviour.
  • Develop optimisation algorithms using real-world sensor and telemetry data.
  • Translate mathematical models and control theory into robust Python software.
  • Work with weather, energy, tariff and smart meter data to test and validate models.
  • Build simulation and testing environments.
  • Improve reliability and performance of models across thousands of devices.
  • Take technical ownership of projects and collaborate with the engineering team.
  • Support evolution of the modelling platform, moving from Python towards C++.

Job description

I'm working with an exciting Tech for Good / Energy Tech business focused on accelerating the transition to low-carbon heating. Their technology is already being used across connected devices, and they're now looking for a Lead Modelling Software Engineer to take ownership of the modelling and optimisation engines behind the platform. This isn't a typical software engineering role.

You will be working where mathematical modelling, physics, software engineering and real-world IoT data come together - building technology with a genuine purpose.

You'll be:

  • Building and improving mathematical models around thermal dynamics and heating behaviour
  • Developing optimisation algorithms using real-world sensor and telemetry data
  • Translating mathematical models and control theory into robust Python software
  • Working with weather, energy, tariff and smart meter data to test and validate models
  • Building simulation and testing environments
  • Improving the reliability and performance of models running across thousands of connected devices
  • Taking technical ownership of projects and working closely with the wider engineering team
  • Supporting the evolution of the modelling platform, including work moving from Python towards C++

We're looking for someone with strong Python and mathematical modelling experience who enjoys taking complex models and turning them into production-ready software.

You'll ideally have experience with:

  • Strong Python
  • NumPy, Pandas and SciPy
  • Mathematical modelling, optimisation or numerical methods
  • Dynamical systems / control theory
  • Model Predictive Control (MPC) would be highly beneficial
  • Software engineering best practice, testing and CI/CD
  • Working with real-world or physical systems/data
  • Technical leadership or ownership of projects

AWS experience would be useful, but isn't essential.

C/C++ experience would also be a bonus, but they're happy to support someone in developing this skill. A Master's or PhD in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or another highly quantitative discipline would be advantageous, but strong relevant commercial experience is equally important.

This is an opportunity to have genuine ownership over a core piece of technology, working directly with the Head of Engineering, leading technically and managing one engineer while remaining highly hands-on.
