Job summary

WSP is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to lead mechanical design for process industries, with emphasis on fine chemicals and related sectors.

You will report to the Mechanical Engineering Manager in Birmingham, work mainly from the office with site assignments, and may travel within the UK and abroad.

You will conduct feasibility studies, detailed design, construction support and coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams to deliver safe, compliant and cost-effective solutions.

Qualifications

  • Experience in mechanical design for process-related industries.
  • Expertise in the design, layout, engineering and specification of process plant and piping for pharma, food and fine chemicals.
  • Experience in contracting industries or process plant operators is beneficial.
  • Proficiency in CAD and 3D modelling; pipe stress analysis (Caesar II or equivalent).
  • Familiar with piping design codes such as ASME B31.3/BS EN 13480.
  • Construction site experience on process industry projects.
  • Experience leading design/engineering teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead as Mechanical Engineer on projects, controlling technical delivery, costs, changes and programme.
  • Perform design, calculations, specifications and data sheets.
  • Prepare flowsheets and line diagrams.
  • Supervise plant layout and pipework design including 3D modelling.
  • Prepare equipment specifications and technical appraisals.
  • Provide site support during construction and commissioning.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines and review designs for compliance.
  • Prepare cost estimates and man-hour forecasts.
