Job summary

A leading company in Defence Communications is hiring a Lead Mechanical Engineer in Southampton. Qualifications

  • Upper second class degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience in Defence.
  • Experience in Electro-mechanical products and RF Product mechanical design.
  • Leadership experience with Mechanical Engineers across multiple Programmes.

Responsibilities

  • Manage Mechanical Engineering solutions throughout the Engineering Lifecycle.
  • Design and develop using 3D CAD tools (preferably PTC Creo).
  • Lead reviews of Mechanical designs in line with standards.

Are you a Mechanical Engineer interested in developing the next generation of Defence Communications equipment across Land, Sea, and Air?

At Leonardo, we are seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer to work on the development and delivery of Communications and Electronic Counter Measure Products.

This role involves developing innovative solutions to meet customer challenges, building on our extensive domain expertise.

The successful candidate will mentor peers, share experiences, and promote best practices to support the growth of the Mechanical Team.

All Mechanical Engineering Team members are encouraged to enhance their skills in design, structural & thermal analyses, and model-driven engineering.

Leonardo offers a mix of on-site and remote work, with on-site presence at our Southampton facility required as needed.

Applicants must be eligible for full UK Security Clearance and meet ITAR classification requirements.

What you’ll do as a Lead Mechanical Engineer:

  • Manage Mechanical Engineering solutions throughout the entire Engineering Lifecycle, considering product quality, safety, reliability, testability, and sustainability.
  • Approve and own Mechanical solutions for harsh environments (Shock, Vibration, EMC, RADHAZ, salt fog, etc.).
  • Ensure the quality and consistency of detailed designs, including calculations and tolerance studies.
  • Design and develop using 3D CAD tools (preferably PTC Creo).
  • Support technical investigations and problem resolution.
  • Review and approve sub-contractor solutions, including test and validation plans.
  • Support the development of Mechanical Engineers within the team.
  • Lead reviews of Mechanical designs in line with standards.
  • Develop Functional Processes and Best Practices.
  • Manage Work Package delivery to meet Quality, Schedule, and Cost targets.

What we need from you:

Essential Skills, Qualifications, and Experience:

  • Upper second class degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience in Defence and naval environments.
  • Experience in Mechanical engineering for Electro-mechanical products.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD tools (preferably PTC Creo).
  • Structured problem-solving skills.
  • Understanding of Structural and Thermal Analyses data.
  • Experience with DfX aspects like Manufacturing, Assembly, Test, and Sustainability.
  • Leadership experience with Mechanical Engineers across multiple Programmes.
  • MEng in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience with RF Product mechanical design.
  • Understanding of CONOPS for Requirements Management.
  • Experience integrating equipment onto military vehicles, command posts, and naval vessels.
  • Ability to produce 'first pass' structural and thermal analyses using tools like PTC Simulate.
  • Knowledge of Model-Based Design tools (e.g., MATLAB, Simulink).
  • Awareness of current trends and technologies in Mechanical Engineering.
