Lead Mechanical Design Engineer, Data Center Engineering

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers, including servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment, to ensure our customers have continual access to the cloud services they rely on. We work on challenging problems with many variables, and we seek talented individuals to join us.

You will join a diverse team of engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, and operations managers. As part of the team responsible for designing and delivering capacity for global data center services, you will work with new technologies and have opportunities for growth. Your role involves driving mechanical engineering services, overseeing design, construction, and implementation of enterprise data centers worldwide. You will collaborate with stakeholders across regions, including APAC, and be responsible for the successful delivery of projects.

Responsibilities include site selection, planning, development, maintaining high performance standards, and utilizing innovations to improve efficiency. You will evaluate cooling systems and select suitable solutions based on data-driven analysis, supporting our mission to change the world through technology.

Key Job Responsibilities
  1. Participate in site selection reviews, coordinate with local utilities, and understand user requirements.
  2. Design and collaborate with disciplines to create construction documents.
  3. Create designs that meet quality and budget requirements.
  4. Specify mechanical equipment with vendors and manufacturers, including AHUs, chillers, cooling towers, controls, and fire systems.
  5. Review and approve equipment submittals.
  6. Define project scope and provide technical support during construction.
  7. Work with commissioning teams to test and validate mechanical systems.
  8. Travel within APAC (~20%) and occasionally globally to sites for reviews and collaboration.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years of mission-critical design experience.
  • 3+ years of project management experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 10+ years of data center design experience, with in-depth knowledge of critical equipment.
  • Master’s degree or Professional Engineering license.
  • Experience interpreting design and construction specifications and drawings.
  • Knowledge of regional building codes and regulations across APAC.
  • Experience with fast-track projects and upgrades.
  • Ability to research and evaluate new designs, technologies, and construction methods.
  • Proficiency in performing complex business case analyses and presenting technical justifications.
