Job Description:

Ubuntu Linux, the world's most popular Linux distribution, is experiencing unprecedented demand. The Canonical Kernel Team, responsible for building, maintaining, and distributing the Linux kernel for Ubuntu, seeks individuals with deep technical expertise in operating system kernels and distributions, along with leadership qualities to drive initiatives and lead delivery teams.

The team is looking for industry veterans with a proven track record to lead in:

  • Engagements with Silicon and Cloud partners for platform solutions
  • Mitigating vulnerabilities and hardening the kernel
  • Enhancing performance and reliability of Ubuntu Linux
  • Streamlining packaging and distribution of third-party components
  • Scaling delivery of Ubuntu Linux to meet quality and schedule standards

This is not a formal managerial role, but strong leadership and collaboration skills are essential. Candidates should have the technical equivalent of 15+ years of experience.

Location: Remote roles are available across time zones, with some responsibilities linked to specific regions.

What your day will look like
  • Setting technical direction and leading engineering teams
  • Coordinating initiatives with management
  • Collaborating with senior leadership to maintain Ubuntu's Linux leadership
What we are looking for in you
  • Self-motivated, well-organized, able to work remotely
  • Excellent English communication skills
  • Expertise in C programming
  • Experience with *nix kernels and distributions; Linux experience preferred but not mandatory
  • Python and Bash scripting skills
  • Proficiency with git
  • Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for up to two weeks
Additional skills that you might also bring
  • Experience with RTOS and real-time performance analysis
  • Knowledge of Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging
  • Kernel patching and debugging experience
  • Understanding of device drivers and low-level system engineering
