Job Description:

We are looking for an engineering manager for our Ubuntu Quality Engineering team, with an impactful mission to enhance Linux distro quality through automation and large-scale data analysis.

As the Ubuntu Quality Engineering Manager, you must be an experienced engineer who has built large-scale software quality assurance frameworks, is passionate about Ubuntu's future, understands the open source ecosystem, and is aware of mission-critical shipping requirements for a Linux distro. You will collaborate with various teams involved in creating Ubuntu, influencing their practices to improve quality at every stage of Ubuntu engineering. Your goal is to innovate quality approaches by integrating automation, third-party analysis tools, community feedback, and testing capabilities. Your team will monitor and improve Ubuntu System quality, driving quality excellence and best DevOps practices across Desktop, Server, Containers, and VMs at multiple levels.

As an engineering manager at Canonical, your role is technical but focused on your team. You will help them grow, do meaningful work, and collaborate effectively with colleagues and the community. Technical leadership and software engineering experience are prerequisites. You will lead, challenge, and develop engineers, influence culture positively, facilitate technical delivery, and work on strategic planning.

What you’ll do

  • Define and monitor quality metrics for Ubuntu
  • Coordinate expectations with engineering teams, management, and stakeholders
  • Promote modern, agile development practices
  • Develop and promote engineering and organizational practices
  • Maintain continuous integration systems for supported deliverables
  • Build a high-quality, high-performance team culture
  • Work remotely with biannual international travel for up to two weeks

Who you are

  • Strong background in software engineering, Linux, and open source
  • Proficiency in C/C++, Python, and Shell scripting
  • Experience with quality processes and CI tools
  • Management experience and a passion for team development
  • Data-driven decision-making skills

Valued additional experience

  • Knowledge of Debian packaging and snaps
  • Experience with agile development environments
