Job summary

Arcadis is seeking a Principal Substation Engineer to lead electrical engineering delivery on projects across industrial, transmission/distribution, and renewable sectors in the UK. You will work with clients, manage complex design challenges, and ensure safety, quality, and cost targets are met.

Based in the UK, the role requires flexibility to visit site locations and client offices as needed, collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams and senior stakeholders to drive project success.

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
• CDAE/LCDAE authorisation preferable.
• Experience as a substation/plant engineer to regulated industry standards.
• Preparation of HV Substation primary Plant design deliverables, feasibility studies, reports, programmes and cost estimating.
• Broad knowledge of transmission technologies and their impact on operation of the transmission system.
• Proven experience in HV & EHV Substation design (AIS & GIS), from 11kV to 400kV.
• Experience in LV and power distribution of Substations.
• Amtech software experience desirable.
• Experience on National Grid, SSEN, SPEN, SPR projects.
• Knowledge of HVDC primary plant is a plus.
• Ability to deliver engineering/projects safely to budget, time and quality.
• Ability to work with internal and external parties within a team.
• Experience writing clear documentation.

Responsibilities

• Client liaison from initial contact through project delivery.
• Delivering small to medium sized projects with minimal support.
• Producing electrical engineering deliverables as needed.
• Liaise with CAD technicians to determine safe, cost-effective substation design solutions.
• Interpret National Grid specs and British/IEC standards.
• Identify and mitigate health, safety risks and hazards.
• Apply CDM designer regulations for HV/EHV projects.
• Coordinate between civil, protection & controls, earthing and studies teams.
• Prepare specifications of HV/EHV plant equipment including supplier docs.
• Support bid development and related documentation.
