UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) invites applications for an Advanced Specialist HPC Computational Engineer to lead modelling, simulation and digital engineering for fusion research. You will shape high-performance computing strategies and contribute to mission-critical software across national and international programmes.

The role combines leadership, research and software development with opportunities to influence cutting-edge numerical methods and accelerator technologies.

Qualifications

• PhD or equivalent in computational, mathematical or physical science with strong publication record or software contributions.
• Experience leading technical projects or teams in research/engineering environments.
• Proficiency in at least one compiled language (C++, Fortran, C, Rust) or advanced scripting evidenced by software contributions.

Responsibilities

• Lead modelling, simulation and uncertainty quantification across fusion research programmes.
• Develop novel numerical methods and algorithms for scientific applications.
• Lead design, development, testing and maintenance of advanced scientific software.
• Drive deployment and assessment of emerging computing architectures and accelerators.
• Design and support digital twin capabilities for fusion systems.
• Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences.
• Contribute to research funding proposals and identify new opportunities.
