Job summary

University of Bristol’s School of Engineering Mathematics and Technology invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate role in genome-scale metabolic modelling for red blood cell engineering. Qualifications

  • PhD or near completion in mathematics, bioengineering, engineering biology, bioinformatics, biotechnology or closely related discipline.
  • Expertise in genome-scale metabolic modelling.
  • Strong mathematical modelling and programming skills.
  • Experience working collaboratively with experimental scientists.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to publish high-quality research.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing in a multidisciplinary team and meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and refine genome-scale metabolic models of reticulocytes and mature red blood cells.
  • Build mathematical models of engineered gene and enzyme circuits and integrate into broader metabolic frameworks.
  • Analyse metabolomics and other datasets to investigate metabolic changes during maturation and engineering.
  • Collaborate with experimental researchers to validate models and optimise circuit design.
  • Work with collaborators and industry partners to advance project objectives.
  • Maintain records of code, models and outputs for reproducible research.
  • Contribute to progress reports and publish research findings.
