Job description

Be the first response when our customers need us most!

As our Lead Gas Engineer, you'll play a vital role within our Emergency Response team, helping to keep customers safe when they need us most. This isn't just about responding to gas escapes and carbon monoxide alarms - it's about providing reassurance, expertise and support during critical situations.

You’ll often be the first person on the scene, acting as the face of Cadent and delivering a professional, customer-focused service. Whether you're supporting vulnerable customers, working alongside the emergency services or resolving gas-related issues in homes and businesses, you'll make a real difference every day.

Covering the Huntingdonshire and Cambridgeshire areas, you'll work across a varied operational patch, supporting customers and communities whenever and wherever you're needed.

This is a varied and rewarding role, offering the opportunity to work across emergency response, metering activities, safety inspections and network operations while leading by example and maintaining the highest standards of safety and customer care. The role also includes participation in a 1-in-4 standby rota, ensuring support is available when our customers need us most.

Why you'll love this role:
  • Emergency Response - Be the first responder to gas escapes and carbon monoxide alarms, helping to protect customers and communities.
  • Customer Impact - Provide reassurance and support to customers during potentially stressful situations.
  • Varied Workload - Undertake a diverse range of activities including meter installations, replacements and maintenance, along with safety inspections and surveys.
  • Safety Leadership - Promote safe working practices and ensure compliance with relevant legislation, standards and procedures.
  • Community Focus - Work closely with customers, emergency services and other stakeholders to deliver the right outcomes.
  • Problem Solving - Use your technical expertise and judgement to assess situations and take appropriate action.
  • Professional Development - Continue to develop your skills and experience within a supportive operational team.
What you'll bring:
  • Gas Industry Experience - Experience working within a gas environment, including testing, purging and commissioning pipework.
  • Technical Knowledge - Good understanding of gas appliances, standards, legislation, codes of practice and health and safety requirements.
  • Communication Skills - Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly and confidently in challenging situations.
  • Customer Focus - Ability to demonstrate empathy and professionalism when supporting customers.
  • Calm Under Pressure - Confidence making decisions and responding effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ownership & Initiative - A proactive approach with the ability to think on your feet and take responsibility.
  • Full UK Driving Licence - Essential for travelling across the network and responding to customer incidents.
Qualifications:
  • CCN1 or CMA1 qualification (essential)
  • MET1 qualification (desirable)
