Job Description:

The Role

Job Overview:

We are looking for a Lead FPGA / Embedded-Systems Engineer to join Arm’s Solution Engineering Hardware Platforms team on a permanent basis. The team is based in Cambridge and Manchester, UK, working at the forefront of Arm-based embedded design.

We are a multi-disciplinary team with expertise in software, FPGA, and board design, delivering platforms internally and externally to support Arm’s IP business model. This role will initially involve leading an FPGA design team to prototype and validate new FPGA hardware platforms and develop reference design material.

The team creates physical hardware development platforms based on Arm’s leading CPU and system IP solutions. These platforms are used for software development and IP validation activities both internally by Arm and externally by partners and customers.

You will be the lead, generating FPGA prototype designs for enablement and validation, working with software and boards engineers. Responsibilities include managing engineering release flows with a focus on efficiency and quality.

The role includes RTL creation and modification along with implementation constraints, producing high-quality, clear, and accurate technical documentation. Familiarity with documentation writing and reviewing is desirable.

The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering designs using techniques such as gated clock conversion and synthesizable models to accurately represent real-world systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Leading and mentoring a team of engineers.
  • Liaising and collaborating with development teams, translating high-level requirements into project and design specifications, ensuring implementation or providing mitigations and alternatives where not feasible.
  • Breaking down technical and delivery requirements into work packages that form part of a resourced project plan.
  • Tracking progress against the project plan, identifying and managing risks, and reporting status.
  • Developing FPGA implementations targeting internal and third-party platforms to demonstrate Arm’s latest IP products.
  • Commissioning FPGA prototyping hardware, including specifying peripheral hardware.

Required Skills and Experience:

Solid FPGA engineering skills with strong technical leadership abilities are essential. Experience includes developing accurate project plans involving multiple teams and ensuring on-time deliveries. Design automation and scripting skills in Python and TCL are advantageous.

  • In-depth knowledge of the FPGA design flow from RTL design, simulation, synthesis, to place & route.
  • Understanding of ASIC/SoC prototyping in FPGA.
  • Strong RTL skills in Verilog / SystemVerilog or VHDL.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken English, with the ability to produce coherent documentation.

“Nice To Have” Skills and Experience:

  • Experience debugging complex designs, embedded software, simulation, and hardware.
  • A creative, structured problem-solving approach.
  • Experience working with the latest Xilinx UltraScale+ devices and tools.
  • Use of Synplify for FPGA implementation.
  • Knowledge of DDR memory subsystem implementation.
  • Programming skills in assembly (preferably Arm assembler), C, C++.
  • Experience with UNIX environment and shell scripting in Tcl, Perl, Python, etc.
  • Knowledge of Arm IP and AMBA standards.

In Return:

You will have opportunities to expand your expertise, face new challenges, and work with advanced technologies. You will collaborate with various engineering teams, including software, IP implementation, and verification, engaging in deep technical discussions with top-tier multifunctional teams.
