As a Lead Electronics Engineer in our customers' electro-optic team, you will lead the electronics development of a key sensor project for the Tempest aircraft. The programme involves the UK and two other nations, so experience working with international partners and excellent communication skills are essential.

This is a key role in developing, maturing, and delivering a mission-critical, electro-optical system for aircraft installation. Ideally, you should have experience managing and leading a team of electronics engineers in developing complex electronic hardware.

The role will be based at our customer's site in Edinburgh, with opportunities for overseas travel to Italy and Japan to collaborate with consortium colleagues.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Manage and lead a team of Electronics engineers in developing sensor system electronics hardware through the full lifecycle, from requirements analysis to customer delivery.
  2. Own electronics work packages, set budgets and schedules with engineering management, plan and execute team tasks, supervise engineers, and report to stakeholders.
  3. Develop electronics architecture, collaborating with Systems, Mechanical, Firmware, and Software Leads to optimize system performance while minimizing volume, weight, and power.
  4. Act as the primary interface with Engineering Management for all electronics development aspects.
  5. Coach and mentor the electronics team for technical and professional growth.
  6. Coordinate with engineers from partner organizations within the multinational consortium and end-user community.
  7. Ensure electronics development aligns with company processes and procedures.
  8. Support wider electronics team through design reviews and knowledge sharing.

Work Experience and Qualifications

Essential:

  • Experience leading teams and managing work packages.
  • Experience developing complex electronics architectures.
  • Expertise in areas such as analogue, mixed-signal, digital, FPGA/DSP, or power electronics.
  • Knowledge of structured development processes.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and team experience.

Desirable:

  • Experience with electro-optic or servo control technologies, such as optical detectors, lasers, imaging systems, control theory, motor/servo drive electronics, power electronics, or communications systems.
  • Experience developing electronics for avionic systems.
  • Experience across all phases of the engineering product lifecycle on multiple projects.
  • Experience coaching junior electronics team members.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electronics Engineering or related STEM field.
  • UK/EU citizenship required for background checks and SC clearance.
  • Current valid SC clearance is advantageous.
