Principal Electronics & Embedded Software Engineer

We’re partnering with a highly respected and fast-growing product development consultancy in Cambridgeshire to find a seasoned electronics engineering leader. This is a rare opportunity to take ownership of a critical capability—electronics and embedded software—within a business known for solving complex, high-impact technical challenges in medical devices, diagnostics, drug delivery, and complex instrumentation.

The right candidate will bring extensive hands-on engineering experience and a strong track record in leading multidisciplinary teams and projects within a product development consultancy or advanced medical device company. This is a strategic and influential position—ideal for someone ready to shape technical direction, lead delivery, and mentor others in a collaborative, inventive environment.

The Role

This is not just another engineering job. This is a leadership opportunity where you’ll be setting technical direction, leading project teams, and guiding the growth of the electronics and embedded software capability.

You’ll:

• Lead the design and development of complex electronic and electromechanical products, including embedded software
• Direct and mentor a growing team of electronics and software engineers
• Collaborate with mechanical, physics, and design specialists to deliver integrated, manufacturable solutions
• Own technical delivery across multiple client projects—ensuring quality, innovation, and on-time results
• Act as a senior client-facing consultant, supporting business development and shaping new project opportunities
• Contribute to the strategic evolution of the consultancy as part of the leadership team

What You’ll Bring

• A proven track record of project and team leadership in product development (consultancy or medical device industry)
• Extensive experience designing, prototyping, and testing electronic systems, including embedded C/C++ software
• A deep understanding of the full product development lifecycle, from concept through to manufacture
• Strong practical lab skills (PCB rework, soldering, test equipment) and comfort in hands-on work
• Excellent cross-functional communication, with the ability to engage clients and motivate teams
• A 1st or 2:1 degree from a top-tier university in electronic engineering or a closely related field

Desirable (but not essential):

• Experience working in regulated industries such as medical devices or diagnostics
• Familiarity with schematic capture, PCB layout, and product verification and validation processes
• Commercial awareness and a passion for helping shape and win new business
