Job summary

GM Performance Power Units is seeking a senior engineer to lead the integration of a high-performance MGU for Formula 1’s hybrid powertrain. You will coordinate electromagnetics, mechanical design, thermal, and controls teams to maximize power density and race reliability.

The role requires extensive motorsport experience, hands-on prototyping and dynamometer testing, and strong knowledge of FIA regulations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Master's/PhD with 5+ years in motorsport or hybrid powertrains is preferred.
  • Hands-on motorsport prototyping and dynamometer testing experience desired.

Responsibilities

  • Lead cross-disciplinary teams (electromagnetics, mechanical, thermal, controls, manufacturing) to integrate and optimize the MGU in the hybrid powertrain.
  • Oversee prototype development, dynamometer testing, and data-driven iterations.
  • Direct design reviews, FMEA, and FIA F1 regulatory compliance for MGU power, weight, RPM limits, and safety interfaces.
  • Drive research into next-gen materials and manufacturing advancements.
  • Support scalable, high-quality e-motor production.

  • Lead cross-disciplinary teams-electromagnetics, mechanical design, thermal, controls, and advanced manufacturing-to integrate and optimize the MGU within the hybrid powertrain, ensuring maximum power density, efficiency, and race reliability. Oversee prototype development, dynamometer testing programs, and data-driven iterations guiding engineering functions to achieve validated, race-ready solutions. Direct design reviews, FMEA processes, documentation, and compliance with FIA F1 regulations on MGU power, weight, RPM limits, and safety interfaces. Foster innovation by driving research into next-gen materials (e.g., advanced composites, magnetic alloys), manufacturing advances, and DFM/DFA principles to enable scalable, high-quality e-motor production.
