Main duties of the job

University Hospital Southampton is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Sonographer to join our friendly team as a Band 8 Lead Educational Sonographer. This is an exciting opportunity to take a leading role in the education and development of our ultrasound workforce.

The successful candidate will be responsible for shaping and delivering high-quality training and fostering a supportive learning environment.

We are looking for someone with strong clinical expertise, a passion for teaching, excellent leadership and communication skills, and a commitment to driving innovation and continuous improvement in practice.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
  • Support and supervise a range of learnings in practice.
  • Demonstrate excellent leadership skills, decision-making, and staff support.
  • Support colleagues to promote learning and provide an excellent learning environment.
  • Maintain sound knowledge of all areas of governance and national/international guidance for ultrasound imaging.
  • Understand work practices of other departments interfacing with radiology.

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Experience
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Ultrasound
  • Appropriate professional registration (e.g., HCPC, NMC)
  • Significant post-qualification experience in at least two ultrasound areas, including abdominal imaging.
  • Experience in leading practice and equipment super-user within your specialty.
  • Ability to interpret scans and provide diagnostic reports.
  • Knowledge of imaging systems and governance standards.
  • Experience supporting colleagues and promoting learning.
  • Evidence of CPD.
Desirable Criteria
  • Experience creating training materials.
  • Experience acting as a Practice Assessor or supporting learning progression.
  • Experience in research, audit, or case studies presentation/publication.
  • Previous management or supervisory experience.
  • Understanding and experience of systems leadership.
